UGC: University Grants Commission

UGC stands for University Grants Commission. It is an organization which looks after the rules, regulation and standards of Universities of India.

Headquarter

UGC is headquartered in New Delhi and it has six regional centers in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore.

History

UGC is setup by the Indian Union Government in 1956. It was established to maintain the standards of higher education. It provides the recognition to the universities of India and also provides funds to such recognized universities and colleges.

Professional Councils

Along with CSIR, UGC conducts Net for appointments in colleges and universities. UGC made it mandatory to teach at graduation level and Post Graduation level since July 2009. Ph.D holders are given 5% relaxation.
