AIFF: All India Football Federation

AIFF stands for All India Football Federation. It is the governing body of association football in India. It administers and manages the game of football in India. It aims to improve, promote and popularize the game of football throughout India. Its head office is at Dwarka in New Delhi.

It is a member of FIFA, AFC and Indian Olympic Association. So, it is obliged to respect and follow the rules and regulations and decisions of AFC and the FIFA.

• It sanctions and organizes all competitive football tournaments and leagues at a national level like I-league and Federation Cup.
• It manages the local football tournaments through the state associations.
• It has the responsibility to manage Indian national football team, women?s team and youth national teams.

• AIFF was founded in 1937.
• In 1948, it took FIFA affiliation.
• It also played an active role in promoting football in Asia; India was one of the founding members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 1954.
• In 1977, it started the Federation Cup; the first club based national tournament.
• In 1996, it started the first national league in the country; the National Football League.
• In 2007, the NFL was reformed as I-League; the first professional football league of India.
