AKA: Alpha Kappa Alpha

AKA stands for Alpha Kappa Alpha; it is the world's first-ever historic African American sorority that was intercollegiate. The Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) came into existence on 15 January 1908 at historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C. The Sorority was established by a group of 16 students, The Sorority was led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle.

The Sorority was created to help African-American women, especially in the region or the areas where they have negligible authority and power due to the lack of opportunities for African-Americans and especially for women in the early 20^th century. The Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) unite to work on 29 January 1913.

Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) is founded on 15 January 1908. It is a type of social organization Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) gets its Affiliation from the NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic council). Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) work mainly for the development of the African-American Community.

It is an international organization with a motto of "By Culture and By Merit". Its symbol is Ivy Leaf. Its headquarter is at 5656 S. Stony Island Ave and also at Chicago, Illinois 60637 in United State.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has also marked education by establishing a scholarship award throughout the year. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has used its sisterhood as a grand lever to raise the status of African Americans, particularly girls and women. It has enriched minds and encouraged lifelong learning and works collaboratively with the other groups to maximize outreach.

History

In the year 1907, an African-American lady Ethel Hedgeman puts her efforts into creating a sisterhood atmosphere at Howard University influenced by her teacher or faculty member Ethel T.Robinson.

The Sorority has 5 tenets on which they led their mission activities.

1. To motivate, uplift and encourage students for high ethical standards and scholastic.
2. To develop a sense of unity and sisterhood feeling among the college girls.
3. The sorority helps the girls and women with their problem and work unitedly for their upliftment in society and improving their social status.
4. The Sorority helps the college girls in developing their interest in higher qualifications and being literate.
5. The main thinking of the Sorority is "Service to All Mankind".

Ethel Hedgeman (Lyle)

Ethel Hedgeman (Lyle) was born on Feb 10, 1887, in St Louis, MO, she did her graduation from summer High School with honour and also grab a scholarship from the college, basically, she was an educator. She was the founder of the first black Sorority founded ever in the world, she was the first lady who came up with such a revolutionary idea.

People know her for her outgoing personality, warmth and her desire to join with other collegians with exceptional talented minds and to work for the betterment of mankind. She died in the year 1950.

Nellie May Quander

Nellie May Quander was the president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority from 1911 to 1912. Nellie May Quander formed a community that make their subsequent efforts to seek and acquire incorporation for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Need for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

In the early 1700s and 1800s, there are quite a few predominantly white institutions that have been formed and created but at that time those institutes were not taking African American students. So as an alternative in the early 1800s the community has the first HBCU (Historically Black and College University) founded for them, at that time the African American people were setting up institutions where they could educate the people like them because they were not getting the admission in those predominantly white institutions even at those predominantly white institutions there were few women as compared to the men. So, they form sororities which were basically groups of women who were like-minded to come together to support each other on those campuses where there are predominantly male students. At that time there were sororities to help women but there was not a single sorority or any kind of organization that put a step forward to help African American Students and particularly African American women community.

How the Members of AKA Sorority Selected

A student can become a member of this organization at the UG (Undergraduate) and Graduate level, but undergraduate students cannot take part in any activities of the Sorority without the presence of a Graduate advisor.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority ask the desiring candidate to perform certain activities other than that highlighted in ME, if the candidate does any task that results in the violation of rules or indiscipline activities then the organization will remove the candidate permanently. The expected members of the sorority must have high moral and ethical standards.

Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority was basically an organization founded by Ethel Hedgeman (Lyle). She came up with a revolutionary idea for helping women and particularly African American women.

Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority also works for the upliftment of the girls and women in the society and also to encourage girls to raise their voices and come forward and take initiative for their education. Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority was the first which was formed to help African American women and girls.
