According to NIRF-released rankings for 2022, AMU ranks 11th among the top universities in India. It is one of the largest universities enrolling more than 37327 students on its campus. The University admits students from all states of India, and students are welcomed from foreign nations like Southeast Asia, Africa, and West Asia. It has 13 faculties spreading across 21 centres and institutes, 117 teaching departments, and three academies. The Institution is immensely popular for its residential character, as many Staff and students reside on the University campus. History![]() Sir Syed Ahmad Khan formed the University as a Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental college in 1875 and began operating on 24 May 1875. Syed Ahmad Khan had led a movement for the College and created an awareness of the need to form a modern education system, especially for the Indian Muslim population. He believed that English and Western Science were necessary to maintain political influence. He wanted to form a college based in Cambridge and Oxford University based in London. He favored the British model of education. A committee was created for the foundation of the College and asked to contribute generously to the fund. Then Governor General and Viceroy of India, Thomas Baring, donated Rs 10,000 and Lieutenant Governor of North Western Provinces donated Rs 1,000 with March 1874 funds; the total money collected for the College was Rs 1,53,920 and 8 annas. Raja Shambhu Narayan of Banaras and Maharao Raja Mahamdar Singh Mahamder Bahadur of Patiala donated Rs 60,000 and Rs 58,000, respectively, to the fund. Contributions have been received by the Maharaja of Vizianagaram as well. In the beginning, the College was affiliated with the University of Calcutta for the matriculation exam and became an affiliate of Allahabad University. A considerable contribution was made by the HEH Mir Osman Ali Khan, Nizam of Hyderabad, of Rs 5,00,000 to the University in 1918. Muslim University was established to carry out efforts to turn College into University. The government of India intimated the association to collect an amount of Rs 30 lakh in a bid to transform it into a university. Muslim University Foundation Committee was a constitution for the collection of required funds. The contribution was received from both non-Muslims and Muslims. Aga Khan and Mohammad Ali Khan provided great aid in collecting funds and constructing the Aligarh Muslim University. Mao College being the attractive point, Aligarh Muslim University was formed by the Aligarh Muslim University Act of 1920. Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged, AMU, came into existence the following year after its establishment. A Medical College was also got incorporated into the Institution. Ajmal Khan Tibbya College and the College of Unani Medicine were instituted in 1927. Later the Institution of Ajmal Khan Tibbya College Hospital concluded in 1932. Other constituents of the University are the Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (1935) and the Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (1962). Students and faculty members of the University endorsed, contributed, and spearheaded the All-India Nationalist Movement, but, pollical patronage turned to the Muslim Separatist Movement after 1939, and political allegiance turned towards Muhammad Ali Jinnah and his creation separate nation for the Muslims called Pakistan. Soon, the University turned into the epicentre of Pakistan's movement. Dr. Sheikh Abdullah, sometimes called Papa Mian, started advocating for women's education and writing for women. He sent a proposal to Sultan Jahan, Begum of Bhopal, and led a delegation to the Lieutenant Governor of the United Provinces. He and his wife laid the foundation stone for the girl's hostel, and Abdullah was the founder of the Women's College of Aligarh Muslim University. Daughters of the Abdullah have contributed to the women's College as principal. Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad has visited the University and provided a grant of Rs 9,00,000. CampusAMU spans over 467.6 hectares of land in the beautiful city of Aligarh. Aligarh Junction is the nearest railway station. AMU is a residential university, as most Staff and students reside on the campus comprising 80 hostels and 19 halls of residence for students (3 for boys and 6 for girls). Provost administers the halls, and the number of teacher wardens look at different hostels. Each hall comprises a common room consisting of a reading room, library, indoor games, sports club, and a literary. The names of the hall are kept upon the people associated with the Aligarh Movement and the University. The University also has many heritage buildings Victoria Gate, Mushtaq Manzil, Strachey Hall, Nizam Museum, Asman Manzil, Victoria Gate, and Jama Masjid. The campus also houses the cricket ground Gulastan-e-Syed, Willingdon Pavillion, a park, and a synthetic hockey ground. Iconic buildings include Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery, Maulana Azad Library, Siddons Debating Union Hall, Sir Syed House, Musa Dakri Museum, and Kennedy Auditorium. The Centenary was celebrated in 2020 with the inauguration of a new gate, and the main university gate is called Bab-e-Syed. The formal head of the University is Chancellor, the titular head and not concerned with daily administration works. University Court elects Chancellor.
