BPT: Bachelor's of Physiotherapy

BPT stands for Bachelor's of Physiotherapy. It is an educational undergraduate degree course. It is basically a para-medical course, which is also said to be an allied health profession. In this fast-moving life, physiotherapists are of immense importance to keep up with the full potential of human resources. The course is available in many medical colleges and health universities all over India.

The course is based on the physical movement of the human body and the usage of the movements to prevent certain movement loss. The four years undergraduate course gives the student knowledge about Administration and Supervision, Allied Therapies, Anatomy, Basic Nursing, Biochemistry, Biomechanics, Clinical observation posting, Community-based Rehabilitation, Community medicine, Electrotherapy, Ethics, Evidence-based physiotherapy and practice, Exercise Therapy, First Aid and CPR, General Medicine, General Surgery, Introduction to treatment, Microbiology, Neurology and neurosurgery, Neuro - Physiology, Orientation to physiotherapy, Orthopedics and Sports Physiotherapy, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychology, Research Methodology and Biostatics, Sociology, Supervised Rotatory clinical training, Supervised Rotatory clinical training. Also, the four years degree course is followed by a six-month internship program.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is nothing but physical therapy. It is performed by educated professionals who are called "Physiotherapists" or physio in short. The physios perform their task by working on the part of the human body, which is affected by any injury, (temporary or permanent), in order to restore it back to its previous condition or in such a stage where the life of the patient is more comfortable.

The physios do the rehabilitation work by manually performing some therapy, suggesting exercises, or giving advice to their patient. Physiotherapy is preferred nowadays, by people of any age group, irrespective of gender to live a pain-free life. Physiotherapy uses electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, evidence-based kinesiology, exercise, foam rollers, acupressure, soft massages, hard massages, sauna bath, steam baths, ice baths, shockwave mobility, etc. for rehabilitating the situation of the soft tissues and bones.

Physiotherapy helps in the recovery process and helps people remain independent as long as it remains feasible for their bodies to keep on. In short, Physiotherapy looks after the overall development of the human body after any injury, which leads to temporary and or permanent disability. The physiotherapists involve in the patients' rehab process by educating them, making them aware, empowering them, through performing therapy and keeping them motivated.

Eligibility for admission to physiotherapy colleges

Admissions to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course are given directly through the institutions. The candidate should be passed from the science stream with physics, chemistry and biology as his/her main subject in class 12 or equivalent course from recognized universities. However, some universities also conduct entrance tests. Names of the entrance test are CET, JIPMER all India entrance test, Guru Govind Indraprastha University Physiotherapy entrance exam, etc. Skill set in the candidate is also important to get success as a physiotherapist.

Along with complete and appropriate clinical knowledge and scientific understanding of all the steps taken to rehab the patient, the candidate should possess the patience, empathy for the suffering of the client, the ability to reassure and explain client the therapy being performed, clarity of speech, ability to operate equipment wisely, confidence, convincing and persuasive and should have good presentation skills.

Jobs after bachelor of physiotherapy

After completing Bachelor in Physiotherapy, and getting further specializations such as Masters of Science (in Anatomy, Physiology), PG diploma in sports sciences, MBA in hospital administration, and Master in Sports Physiotherapy, the candidate can get various jobs in different arenas such as in rehabilitation centers, retirement and old age homes, research centers, health and fitness centers. They can get an opportunity as physiotherapy lecturers, research assistants, therapy managers, sports physio rehabilitators and many more.

Average annual salary for BPT graduates

A Physiotherapist who has the task to give physiotherapy care to patients in a hospital has earnings varying from 2-7 lpa. A researcher coordinating with team members to test parameters and accomplish research goals earns up to INR 3- 7 lpa. A lecturer, teaching students in physiotherapy colleges at undergraduate and postgraduate levels can earn up to about INR 2-6 lpa. A home care physiotherapist providing services to clients at their home can earn up to INR 2-4 lpa. Professionals working with sports people to take care of their injuries, who are said as sports physio rehabilitators earn about INR 4-7 lpa.
