CDR stands for call detail record (CDR). It is a document that contains details about phone calls made for reporting and invoicing purposes, a CDR report can provide a large number of organizations with accurate information about the places, times, and methods of calls.

Call detail records (CDRs) are recordings of phone calls that include the caller's identity and phone number, the caller's name and phone number, the date and time when the call was placed, how long the call lasted, and how frequently the calls were made and the use of diagnostic information items like the different features used while calling and reason for call termination. The processing of CDRs into consumption, capacity, performance and diagnostic reports occurs regularly. With this data, it is simpler to identify deviations from typical calling patterns, such as after-hours and international calls, large departures from prior reporting periods, and contact destinations that do not correspond to the typical company calling patterns.

What is a Call Detail Record?

A CDR offers meta-data - information that is information related to how a particular phone number and user are using the phone system. Usually, this metadata uses the following information:

When was the call made (the date and time)

How long did the call last ( time in minutes)

Who called whom (source and destination of phone numbers)

What sort of call was placed (inbound, outbound, or toll-free call)

How much did the call cost (based on the per minute rate)

CDRs may also include meta-data from text messages and other internal and secure communications transmissions. However, the CDR report does not reveal what was stated in the messages or calls. The call detail record only specifies the occurrence of the calls or messages and estimates the fundamental call characteristics.

Details of a CDR Report

Typically, a CDR report will provide data that has been divided down by user or by phone number. Specific data, such as call volume and minutes, can be displayed for a single user in a CDR report. A CDR for a phone number gives you a better overview of how your phone system is used across the board of your company. It is used to determine who spends the most time on the phone, how long calls last, and how much each employee spends per call, it is helpful to generate CDR data for specific employees. It may lead to better workforce management as well as resource conservation for the company. The CDR also stores the sender and recipient phone numbers of SMS messages from a mobile device, but not the actual message content.

Importance of Call Detail Record

A CDR log keeps track of all chargeable communications transmissions on the phone system. This permits phone companies to create compiled phone bills and provides the ability to maintain detailed records of when and how our phone system was utilized. They are widely used by companies to help with call reporting and billing. CDRs are used by billing departments to record phone system usage, settle disputes, and track financial transactions. CDRs can also be used by IT departments to identify any service interruptions that may have occurred during the process of transmission.

CDRs have the potential to identify trends in calling and know about how their staff members utilize personal phones. Evaluating these patterns and trends, allows an organization to improve management and employment decisions. The amount of money that particular offices or groups are spending on calling minutes can be found in a CDR report for a specific phone number, on the other hand. This is helpful for a company to maintain many phone lines for various locations or departments. It can also be used to examine the calling operations of any company in general with this type of report.

Most significantly, the CDR also provides the location from which the calls were made, which is frequently relevant in criminal investigations. This aids in pinpointing a person's whereabouts on a specific day. For instance, using that information could help establish or refute a suspect's claim that they were there at the crime site at the time it was committed.

The CBI, Income Tax department, intelligence agencies, police, and counter-terrorism organizations like the NIA and the ATS are just a few of the law enforcement organizations that are permitted access to CDR during an investigation, subject to certain approvals.
