CE: Common Era

CE stands for Common Era. It is a type of calendrical notation that is being widely used in the calendars it is similar to the AD (anno domini) that we have also read about in many historical articles that we all must have read in our school in history classes. The word Common Era (CE) is mainly used by the non-Christians and JEWS to refer to the same system of calculations that are being done by the other calendars.

CE Full Form

The use of this calendrical system was earlier been used to show sympathy towards the non-Christian community, the use of this calendar gets a boost in the first decade of the current century.

Numerically both the calendar system describes the same year like 2018 CE and 2018 AD describe the same year. The year notations for the CE and BCE are GREGORIAN CALENDAR while the year notation for the BC and AD is JULIAN CALENDAR, the calendar era that is world widely used is Gregorian Calendar.

The common era term is found to be more widely used in the early 1708 and comes to more widely used in the mid-19th century by Jewish scholars and later from the 20th century the use of the CE (common era) and BCE (before common era) came to be used widely in scientific publications and the academic field because the CE (common era) and BCE (before common era) was considered as the religiously neutral term these terms were more widely used by those poets and Authors who wish to be sensitive towards Jews and non-Christian community by not clearly saying Jesus as "CHRIST" and nor Lord or Dominus.

History

Dionysius Exiguus was the Christian monk who devised the year numbering system that is used with Common Era notation in the year 525 to replace the system that is era of Martyrs system because he did not want to remember and carry on the memory of the tyrant who once persecuted Christians, he numbered the years by fixing a year called "EPOCH" the time of the JESUS CHRIST.

Dionysius Exiguus's system of naming the years become more widely used in the EUROPIAN countries, BEDE in England also used this system of numbering of years in the year 731 among the western European countries PORTUGAL was the last country to switch to the system that is been made or designed by Dionysius Exiguus in 1422.

Though Jews also use the Gregorian Calendar without using the AD prefix, they also have their own year calendar named as HEBREW CALENDAR

In early 1825 the term VE (Vulgar Era) was in use among the Jewish community to depict the years in the western calendar. In the year 2005, the notation Common Era has also been in usage in HEBREW LESSONS for a large period of time.

In the year 1856, the historian Morris Jacob Raphall and Rabbi used the terms CE and BCE in their books "pos-Biblical History of the Jews". The Jews also used the term current era. Some famous artifacts of that era are shown below;

Contemporary Usage of CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era)

Some institutes globally in the field of education, theology, archaeology and history have completely adopted the terms CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era) despite having many arguments and disagreements. Several guides have now preferred or mandated the usage of the term CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era)

In 2002 in the United Kingdom for England and Wales, an advisory panel for the religious education syllabus recommend the usage of CE (common era) and BCE (before common era) over the usage of AD (anno domini) and BC (Before Christ) by the year 2018 many local educational institutes started using

CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era) but in the year 2018 the NATIONAL TRUST announced that it will use the demotion AD and BC rather than using CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era)

Some parts of the British Broadcasting Corporation use CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era) but some denied using them. In 2019 the news guides of the British Broadcasting Corporation have entries for AD (anno domini) and BC (before Christ) but not for the usage of the CE and BCE.

In AUSTRALIA in 2011 the media reports suggested the usage of BCE (before the Common Era) and CE (Common Era) over AD and BC. This change makes kiosks and opposition by many political parties and religious leaders. After some weeks the Australian reporting authority, curriculum and Assessment denied the rumor and announced that the AD and BC notation will remain the same and the CE (common era) and BCE (before common era) is suggested as the optional activity

In Canada in the year 2013 the Canadian Museum of Civilization which was previously been shifted to the usage of BCE (before the common era) and CE (common era) and later decided to switch back to the usage of BC and AD in material intended for citizens and while remaining CE (common era) and BCE (before common era) in academic content
