What is Facebook

Facebook is a social networking website to get connected with our friends and family. Facebook allows us to create profiles, send messages, and upload videos and photos. We can do only this if we are registered on Facebook. By using Facebook, we can keep in touch with our family, friends, and colleagues. We can do the following things on Facebook:

  1. We can establish our Timeline on Facebook. Timeline is an ongoing history of our life.
  2. We can connect our timeline to the timeline of our family, friends, and relative.
  3. We can communicate with our friends.
  4. We can share our thoughts.
  5. We can also share our pictures.
  6. We can plan the events on Facebook.
  7. We can join the groups to get more knowledge.
  8. We can also promote a cause or business.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes in 2004. In 2004, all these inventors were students and studying at Harvard University. There is a total of 2.50 billion monthly active users as of December 2019. Facebook opened to everyone by September 2006 with an email address, and the user age should be 18 or older. There is a total of 37 different languages available on Facebook with the following features:

  • We can manage our friend list and can choose privacy settings for who can see content on our Facebook profile.
  • We can upload photos and maintain photo albums. It can be shared with our friends on Facebook.
  • The interactive online chat is supported by Facebook.
  • We can comment on our friend's profile pages to keep in touch, to say "hi or share information".
  • Businesses use Facebook as a vehicle for social media marketing because it supports business pages, fan pages, and group pages.
  • Facebook has a developer network that delivers monetization and advanced functionality options.
  • Facebook allows us to stream video live using Facebook Live.

Facebook acquired 82 companies, including Instagram and WhatsApp. Instagram was launched on 6 October 2010 by Kevin Systorm. After seeing the success of Instagram, Facebook bought it in 2012 for $1bn (74,66,00,00,000.00 Indian Rupee). The client application of WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for 19 billion US dollars.

The basic no-frills profile on Facebook includes the following:

  • A place for a profile picture
  • Contact information and "About You" space
  • The Wall
    A place where friends can publicly post comments for us.
  • Status update
    Where we can tell our friends how we are or what we are doing.
  • News Feed
    Regularly updated information about our friends, groups they've joined, applications, or friends they have added, changes to their profiles.
  • A space for uploading photos and videos.
