FTE Stands for Full-Time Equivalent. An FTE is a measuring unit that is equal to one person. It is one unit of work in the case of a worker, or it is the work that a student completes during a school day. The term "full-time equivalent" (FTE) refers to the number of hours a single employee puts in during a workweek. The estimated number of FTEs each year is 2,080 hours, or eight hours per day, five days per week. By FTE part-time employee hours can be converted into full-time employee hours using the FTE metric. Since it standardizes the metrics, it is simpler to calculate a project's cost in terms of time, money, and personnel. A full-time employee (FTE) is defined as 2.5 if, for instance, one employee worked 50 hours, one worked 10 hours, and one worked 40 hours on a project during a particular week. If a full-time employee works for 40 hours in a week, this amounts to 100 total hours during that week.

FTE Full Form

When it comes time to make staffing decisions, the FTE calculation is used in project management, and more specifically, resource management. You can use the following FTE equation, for instance, to calculate your staffing needs if your construction project is expected to take 500 hours to complete: 500 hours equals 8 hours times the number of full-time workers times the number of days worked. The result of dividing 500 by eight is that 62.5 full-time workers are required to work consecutive days of eight hours each: (Total Days Worked) x (Total Full-Time Employees) = 500 hours/8 hours = 62.5. FTE can be used in many more situations. It mostly entails calculating a worker's or student's workload. Typically, an individual's whole working or school day is represented by 1.0 FTEs; however, if the FTE is 0.5, it means the employee or student has contributed less than a full day of labor or has attended less than a full day of classes, respectively.

FTE Calculation

Assuming a full-time employee works five days a week for an average of eight hours each day, the following breakdown of their hours is estimated annually:

8 hours per day x 5 days per week = 40 hours

After that, the amount is multiplied by the number of weeks worked annually:

40 hours per week x 52 weeks per year = 2,080 hours

This is how a business determines the typical annual number of hours a full-time employee works.

Additionally, a worker who puts in 30 or more hours will be given 1 FTE. Employees who add 50 FTE or more to their schedules are qualified to obtain suitable medical coverage from their employers.
