1) Safe and Ethical Use of AI

Recently, the Tamil Nadu government announced that they are working on a policy for artificial intelligence's safe and ethical use. This first-of-its-kind policy will be like a rule book for state agencies and vendors using AI for governance services.

2) Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS) to identify criminals

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Ministry of Home Affairs, and Government of India recently floated a tender to build an Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS). The proposed AI system will be trained using the database's collection of photographs of Indian citizens.

3) AI system in government buses

In August, the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka announced plans to install AI systems in buses to alert drowsy drivers and avoid collisions. The AI-powered anti-collision system consists of two sensors, one on the front bumper, to alert the bus driver to any danger or the possibility of a collision. A second sensor is placed near the headlight switch to alert inattentive or drowsy drivers.

4) AI-based traffic scan

In May this year, the West Bengal government and the state's IT department, along with the police, announced that they are working on an AI system to monitor vehicles and immediately send alerts to the police if there is any abnormality in driving behavior. If the distance between two speeding cars becomes too short, the AI-enabled device will track the vehicles, immediately sending an alert to the nearest traffic police.

5) Chatbot to register home and marriage

A few months back, Telangana's Department of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communications (ITE&C) announced that the department is working on chatbots that will work on Robotic Process Automation (RPA). The chat will draw out details like the locations of Sub-Registrar Officers (SROs) and fees for marriage, property, and society registration.

6) India will use AI and supercomputers to improve weather forecasting

In an International Workshop on Prediction Skills of Extreme Rain Events and Tropical Cyclones: Current Status and Probability (IP4) and Annual Climate Change, Dr. M. Rajeevan, Union Secretary, Earth Sciences, announced the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Helps in improving the understanding of weather and climate phenomena and their forecasts. Currently, the ministry is working on expanding the existing supercomputing facility to 100 petaflops (PF) in the next 2 years.

7) AI-Based Solutions for Agriculture in India

In October, the Maharashtra government announced the implementation of AI-based solutions for agriculture in India to reduce farm risk for farmers under the Maha Agri-Tech project.

The technology will reduce farming risks from unreliable rains or pests and predict crop-wise and region-wise yields. Agriculture will have satellite imagery to help access crop area, crop status, and crop yield at the district level.

8) AIRAWAT

AIRAWAT or AI Research, Analytics and Knowledge Assimilation plaTform is a cloud computing platform for Big Data announced by Niti Aayog last year. The platform will be focused on big data analytics and similar tasks.

It will support multi-tenant, multi-user computing with resource partitioning, a dynamic computing environment, and more features.

9) AI For Improvement of Services in Rural Areas

A few months ago, CSC e-Governance Services India Limited (CSC SPV) announced the development and delivery of new digital services to around 900 million citizens living in rural areas in India using Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics in areas such as finance, education, health care, among others.

10) Adoption of Privacy

In May 2019, the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), announced that the Government of India is working towards creating a body completely dedicated to the development of AI in the country. Privacy will be taken as a fundamental right and is said to be the first step toward preparing the country for AI adoption.

11) Government of India will fund 100 startups

Recently, the central government of India announced that it plans to directly fund 100 startups to use natural language translation techniques in various languages. In addition, the government will also use this platform for its purposes, such as translating videos of technical education lectures and others.

12) Center of Excellence

Earlier this year, the Government of India and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) joined hands to set up a Center of Excellence for Waste to Wealth Technologies to implement sustainable, scientific, and technological solutions for waste management.

Recently, Karnataka's Department of Information and Technology announced that the department had joined hands with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up a Center of Excellence (CoE) for Design.

13) Global Hackathon on Artificial Intelligence

Think Tank of India, NITI Aayog launched the Global Hackathon on Artificial Intelligence in late 2018.

NITI Aayog joined Singapore-based AI startup Perlin to launch 'AI for All Global Hackathon.

Although the announcement was made in December 2018, the hackathon was held in January and March 2019. The hackathon ran in two phases, with the first phase ending on 15 January 2019 and the second phase ending on 15 March 2019.

14) The Government of India is pushing investments through the following areas to establish an AI ecosystem.

• Digital India: Double allocation of INR 3,073 crore to further research in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), among others.
• National Program on AI: Set up by NITI Aayog at IIT Chennai. The research will focus on encouraging Big Data, cybersecurity, and Robotics are some of the initiatives that will help promote Industry 4.0.

15) Artificial Intelligence Specialist - GS-15

As a Center of Excellence Artificial Intelligence Specialist, you will be responsible for advancing the applied use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the federal government and showing AI's potential through early-stage solutions (e.g., for "the art of the possible") as well as supporting major enterprise-wide AI/ML initiatives across federal agency partners. In addition, you will be asked to provide input on important policy issues regarding the use of AI/ML in government.

The ideal candidate must have previously worked in AI/ML in a leadership capacity. They will play a role as an expert advisor to federal agency partners, developing project plans and managing delivery activities, providing leadership, and influencing the adoption of technological AI/ML solutions.

Your location will determine your locality since most of our locations are remote. If the position is not remote, your location will be determined based on the office location where the position is located. The base salary range does not include any adjustments for the locality.

Key objectives

• Manage and direct research and development (R&D) and processes to meet the needs of partner agencies

• Manage employee and leadership expectations by communicating updates, providing guidance, and raising issues and concerns to employees
• Ensure the COE work provides a strong return on investment to the federal government and taxpayers.
