GPSC: Gujarat Public Service Commission

GPSC stands for Gujarat Public Service Commission. It is an institution formed under the Constitution of India's article 315 (1). It was created on 1st May 1960. It has the work to choose the candidates for the civil services in the state of Gujarat based upon the merit of the candidate and the prescribed rules of reservation. Also, it is known to everyone that according to article 316 of the Constitution of India, the governor of the state has the power to select the candidate as the member and Chairman of their own state's Public Service Commission (PSCs). Presently, Shri Nalin B. Upadhyay, a retired IAS officer, is the Chairman in charge, along with IAS Shri R. J. Halani as the Secretary of the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC).

Functions of the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC)

The Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) is bound to perform the following functions and services to Article 320 of the Indian Constitution. The functions are as follows:-

  1. To host exams for recruitment to the state services.
  2. To advise on matter concerning -
    1. Ways to recruit members to various services of the state
    2. Rules and regulations that are meant to be followed while recruiting candidates to state civil services, in addition to granting promotions, ordering inter-service transfers and selecting the worthy candidate for such appointments, promotions and transfers.
    3. The disciplinary matters that have an effect on the Government service providers.
    4. The ownership of the reimbursements of the legal expenditure made by the government servant in defending them in the legal procedures initiated against them while they were still on duty.
    5. On the claim bills for receiving injury pension to the government officer
    6. Or any other information or matter having connection or referred to the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) by the governor of the state.

However, there are limitations imposed by the Gujarat Public Service Commission (Exemption from Consultation) Regulations, 1960, which keep a check on these functions, as stated under clause (3) of Article 320 of the Constitution of India. The above-given role was given full responsibility to Article 320 of the Constitution of India.

It was under section 315 (1) of the Indian Constitution where the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) described the public service commission's functions. It had enough power, as listed, and the more significant power lies in the control of the advisory. The Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) can give advice to the President, Prime Minister and governor of any given state in the country. The constitution of India gives credit to its quick formation of the Gujarat Public Service Commission, according to the provision provided in the Indian Constitution.

As already told, the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) conducts the exam to recruit candidates for the state civil services posts. It offers job opportunities in various fields. To be eligible to sit in the exam for recruitment in the state civil services, the candidate must have finished the Bachelor's degree program in the respective field or concerned discipline. Some of the services also require a certain fitness level of the candidate. The age limit criteria vary according to the reservation rules applicable and the job profile being applied in.

The fields of work include the Drug Inspector, Gujarat Engineering Sevices, and others. The Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) exams are generally held in three stages. The first is the qualifying, the second is the writing, and the final round is the interview or, in other words, the personality test-the candidates who successfully clear all three levels get recruited. At present, for the year 2022, the GPSC has put out the notification for the vacancy of about 245 seats. The various posts for which the vacancy are as follows -

  3. Assistant Engineer (Civil) - 77 posts
  4. Assistant State Tax Commissioner - 28 posts

  7. Deputy Executive Engineer (Civil) - 34 posts
  8. District Inspector Land Officer - 06 posts
  9. Executive Engineer (Civil) - 24 posts
  10. Law Officer - 01 post
  11. Scientific Officer (Medical) - 02 posts
  12. Social Welfare Officer - 01 post
  13. State Tax Officer (STO) - 50 posts
