GSI: Geological survey of india

GSI stands for Geological Survey of India. It is a government organization in India which deals with conducting geological surveys and studies. It is an office attached to the Ministry of Mines and the second oldest survey in the country.

GSI is established in 1852. It is headquartered at Kolkata, West Bengal. It has six Regional offices which are located at Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Shillong and Kolkata. The Union Cabinet formed a High Powered Committee (HPC) to review the work of Geological Survey of India and evaluate its ability to meet the emerging challenges considering the technical and manpower resources of the organization.

Key Functions

• It provides the basic earth science information to the government, industry and the general public.
• It actively participates in international geoscientific fora.
• It creates and updates the national geoscientific data and mineral resource assessment, air-borne and marine surveys.
• It conducts multifarious geo-technical, geo-environmental and natural hazards studies like glaciology, seismotectonics, etc.
• Its main responsibility is to create a geological map of the country so that it could explore for coal and other ores.
