Introduction

IE (Internet Explorer) Mode on Microsoft Edge is a compatibility mode that allows the browser to display outdated sites and webpages written for Internet Explorer. It also allows enterprise users to access their organization's websites from a single browser.

The IE Mode uses the integrated engine for new sites, whereas legacy sites use the Trident MSHTML engine from Internet Explorer 11 (IE11). As part of the feature, only the sites users specify (by policy) will use IE mode, while all other sites will be rendered with the new engine.

How to Enable Internet Explorer Mode in Edge

To load a website in IE mode in Microsoft Edge, users must first enable it. While it should be enabled by default, it's a good idea to double-check that Edge can operate in Internet Explorer mode. Here's how you do it:

Open Microsoft Edge and then click or press the three-dot button in the upper-right corner. In the menu that appears, click or tap the Settings option.

Open settings in Microsoft Edge. This will open the browser's Settings page in a new tab. On the left sidebar, pick Default browser, and then look at the Internet Explorer compatibility column on the right. Its first option is called "Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode)," and its short description is "When browsing in Microsoft Edge if a site requires Internet Explorer for compatibility, users can choose to reload it in Internet Explorer mode."

How to Open a Website in Internet Explorer from Edge

Then, from the list of options in the menu, select Reload in Internet Explorer mode by clicking or tapping the three-dot button located in Edge's upper right corner.

In Internet Explorer mode, reload the page, then open in Internet Explorer mode quickly in Microsoft Edge. A notification box labeled "This page is open in Internet Explorer mode" will appear in the browser's upper-left corner, alerting users to the situation.
