IOC: International Olympic Committee

IOC stands for International Olympic Committee. It is a not-for-profit independent international organization which is the supreme authority of the Olympic movement. It is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. As of July 2017, Thomas Bach is the president of IOC. The president oversees the activities of the committee while the main decisions are taken by the IOC Sessions and Executive Board. It was established on 23 June 1894 and the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held on 6 April 1896 in Athens, Greece and it has not stopped growing ever since.

IOC generates revenue for the Olympics through marketing programmes including the sale of broadcast rights and The Olympic Partner (TOP) programme. More than 90 percent of this revenue is used to help athletes and sports organizations around the world.

IOC performs various functions according to the Olympic Charter. Some of its major functions or roles are as follows:

  • To support and encourage the promotion of ethics in sport
  • To protect the independence of the Olympic Movement and ensure regular celebration of the Olympic Games
  • To fight against any form of discrimination that can affect the Olympic Movement
  • To support and encourage the participation of women in sports at all levels
  • To fight against doping in sport, match-fixing and any political or commercial abuse of sport or athletes
  • To support the concerns for environmental issues and promote the sustainable development in sport
  • To support and encourage initiatives that blend sport with education and culture
  • To support and encourage the activities of International Olympic Academy and other institutions which contribute to Olympic education
