Background

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

The University came into existence by the act of parliament. The first chancellor of the University was G. Parthasarathy. Rector and Founder Chairman was Prof. Moonis Raza. M.C. Chagla, former minister of Education, placed the bill in the Rajya Sabha for the formation of Jawaharlal Nehru University on 1 September 1965. Lok Sabha cleared this bill on 16 November 1966, which became the JNU Act and came into effect on 22 April 1969.

The Indian School of International Studies merger with the Jawaharlal Nehru University occurred in June 1970. After the merger, the "Indian" word was replaced with School and became known as the School of International Studies of the JNU.

Scholarships

University is known for granting financial aid to worthy and deserving students, and selection is conducted through various criteria. The followings are information related to scholarships:

  • Okita Memorial Fellowships: It is provided to those meritorious Indian students who have admitted themselves to the MA 2ND year program, and M.Phil. 2 Fellowships valuing INR 5000/month with annual support of INR 10,000 is awarded to chosen students.
  • Merit- Cum means Scholarships: Those students whose parent/guardian earns below INR 2.5 Lakh/annum.
