KGF: Kolar Gold Fields

KGT stands for Kolar Gold Fields. It is a gold mining area located at the Bangarpet taluk in Kolar District of Karnataka, India. It was one of the major gold mines in India, which was closed in 2001 due to increased production costs, reducing deposits and low gold production.

KGF Full Form

It was a famous site for gold in the past and the second deepest gold mines in the world. It was also referred to as "Little England" by the then British population owing to its pleasant weather and mesmerizing landscape. Even today, you can see the British bungalows, well-planned streets, and structures at this place. A golf course was also established in 1885 at KGF for British employees of the gold mines, and it is registered under the Indian Golf Union.

  • The first-ever hydroelectric plant in India was built at Shivanasamudra to provide electricity to the KGF.

  • Silicosis which is a lung diseases generally caused by dust arising due to mining was first noticed in KGF.
  • The first-ever cosmic ray neutrino interaction took place in the world took place in 1965 in KGF. It was a joint project of India, Japan, and the UK.
  • The longest passenger rail of the world, "Swarna Express" starts from KGF up to Bangalore.
