What is the full form of LBS

1) LBS: Pound-Mass or Pound

LBS has been derived from a Roman word Libra, it is represented by 'lb' or 'lbs'. It is an international term used to define weight or mass of an object.

Pound is a Latin word meaning 'a pound by weight'.

United States and countries of commonwealth have agreed on the term pound and yard.

2) LBS: Location Based Service

LBS is a software used through mobile devices accounting device's geographical location. It uses device's GPS system to locate a person's location. When a user opts in for services, service provider tracks the location of the user itself without any manual entry. It has a number of uses in social networking sites. LBS have a variety of use such as entertainment, education, personal life, etc. For example, a person can enquire about the nearest hospital from the respective location.

Locating Methods:

  • Control Panel Locating ? Find a position with the help of control panel based on radio signal delay of the closest cell-phone tower.
  • GSM Locating ? Finding location with the help GSM built-in mobile phones
  • Self-reported Location ? In this, a person has to go through a map and locate himself on the map. It was low cost method and now commonly known as check-in.


LBS can be used in a variety of things. Some of them are:

  • Emergency: a user can dial-up the respective emergency number and his location will be automatically traced. It can be used in the cases where user can not reveal his location due to some problem.
  • Navigation: In this, user's mobile location can be traced.
  • Social media : In social media, user have an option of check-in, through which they can share their location with their social media contacts.
  • Mobile location based gaming: In games like city secrets and my town, a player has to check in with their location.
