List of DD Channels

DD national stands for Doordarshan National. It is a public entertainment television channel. The channel came into existence in the year 1959. The channel DD1 aired its first sponsored TV serial named "Hum Log" in the year 1984. This serial turned out to be successful therefore many other series were aired on DD. Name of some of the popular serials of Doordarshan include Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Buniyaad, Malgudi Days, Shrikant, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Mirza Ghalib, Chanakya, etc. The year 1982 to 1992 were the prime years for the DD channel.

After the introduction of new channels in India, the DD channel faced strong competition from Zee TV in 1992. Later many other private channels were introduced over time like Sony TV, Star Plus that affected the popularity and viewership of DD. By 1995 channels like DD Metro, Home TV, Star Plus and Sony TV had started showing their serials and other programs on prime time slots that also affected the viewership of DD.

However, still today lots of people like to watch shows and serials on DD as they have their own unique style, presentation and script. We can say that DD is an evergreen TV channel that has successfully survived the competition from other private TV channels.
