Engineering is the study of science and technology in the context of design and construction. 1. Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai
IIT, Chennai, is famously known as the Indian Institute of technology madras or IIT Madras. It is an engineering college situated in Chennai. Chennai was earlier called Madras, and hence the name of this institute is IIT Madras. IIT Madras is considered one of the most reputed engineering colleges in India. It was founded in 1959 with the help of the German Government in technological and financial assistance. There is a total of 16 IITs in India established by the Indian government, and IIT madras rank 3rd among these 16.
This college is established on approximately 630 acres of land called as IIT madras campus, which was earlier a part of Guindy Park, and therefore its campus has a protected forest. IIT council is a body that administers all the staff, students, and faculty of the IIT. The college has 550 faculty members, approximately 1250 staff members, and 8,000 students.
2. Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai
VIT Chennai was established in 1987. It is a deemed university accredited A grade by NAAC. The institute is approved by the ministry of human resource development and recognized by UGC. The total area in which the university is situated in 177 acres covering all the basic amenities required by students and faculty. The campus has a library, girls' and boys' hostels, auditorium, sports, cafeteria, and medical facilities. Apart from this, the campus also has its bank, guest room, and convenience store and transport facility.
Its campus is very beautiful, surrounded by scenic beauty, and therefore it is called the green campus. This college is famous for its infrastructure, which is big and spacious. The classrooms are well furnished and properly ventilated. The laboratories are equipped with up-to-date technology for research purposes. The institute offers graduate, postgraduate, and some doctorate programs. Admissions in these programs are undertaken by the university only by filing online applications from the university's website. Apart from university criteria, students must also qualify for national level exams like GATE, CAT, GMAT, CMAT, etc.
3. College of Engineering (Anna University) - Guindy, Chennai
This college was established in 1794 as an Open University affiliated with Anna University. It is the oldest known technical college in India. CEG Guindy comprises a total of 12 research centers and 33 departments covering undergraduate, post-graduate, and Ph.D. courses.
The institute has an additional 7 affiliated centers - Centre for Women Empowerment, Knowledge for Data Centre, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Logistic Centre and Centre for Intellectual Property Right, Centre for Distance Education, and AUTVS Centre for Quality Management. The campus has all the facilities that students require, like a specialized computing center, gym, cafeteria, swimming pool, health center, banking facilities, and sports ground.
4. Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai
This institute was established in 1985. Earlier it was called Hindustan College of Engineering, and then later, in 2008-09, it was renamed as Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science. It is a well-reputed institute in the field of science and engineering. The campus is approximately 150 acres big, supporting all the basic amenities for students and faculty. The basic amenities provided by the college include - Hi-tech labs, sports, bank and ATM facility seminar halls, transportation facility, library, vehicle section, and auditorium. National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) are a few of the several activities where students are encouraged to participate.
The university provides different courses under science, commerce, and engineering streams. Graduate, post-graduate, and doctorate programs are provided to the students. The admission process is completely online via the university's official website. In some of the programs, apart from merit, students are required to clear various other exams like NATA, aptitude test, and personal interview also.
5. SRM Institute of Science and Technology - SRM University, Chennai
Sri Ramaswami Memorial University is a very popular private institute of engineering. The university offers a wide range of courses from undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. degrees. It was established in 1985, and then later in 2003-04, it was given deemed status. It was in 2006 that it was finally recognized as a full-fledged university by UGC.
