A finance minister is one of the top ministers of the central cabinet ministers of India. The Finance minister of the country controls major financial activities of the country. He has the authority and power to make the annual budget and taxation law of the country.

History of finance minister

The ministry of finance was founded on 29th October 1946. At that time, Liaquat Ali Khan (a statesman and a lawyer of Pakistan) was the first finance minister of the interim government of Louis Mountbatten. He had been in charge from 29th October 1946 - 14th August 1947. After the independence of the Nation on 15th August 1947, Sri R.K Shanmugham Chetty became the 1st finance minister of India. He presented the first budget of the country on 26th November 1947.

However, some of them became 2 to 4 times the finance minister, so Nirmala Sitharaman, the present finance minister, is the 46th finance minister of India. 1. R.K Shanmukham Chetty

List of Finance Minister in India

Mr. Shanmukham Chetty was the 1ST (15th August 1947-17th August 1948) finance minister of India. His full name was Ramasamy Chetty Kandasamy Shanmukham Chetty. He was a lawyer, economist, and politician. Mr. Chetty was born in British India in Madras on 17th October 1892 and died on 5th May 1953. He was a member of the Swaraj Party and Justice Party. He has done his education at Dr.Ambedkar Government Law College and Madras Christian College. Apart from the finance minister, he was also President of the Central Legislative Assembly and Diwan of Cochin kingdom. He made the Nation's first budget and presented it in parliament on 26th November 1947.

2. Jawahar Lal Nehru

Jawahar Lal Nehru was the 1st Prime Minister and 2nd (5th February 1949- 5th April 1949), 5th (24th July 1956-30th August 1956), and 7th (14th February 1958-22nd march 1958) Finance Minister of free India. He was born on 14th November 1889 in Allahabad and died on 27th May 1964. He did his B.A from Trinity College and Law from Inner Temple. He was a Barrister, writer, and politician, and a member of the Indian national congress. Nehru got Bharat Ratna in 1955. He served the country variously as two times the finance minister of India, three times the Defence Minister of India, the minister of external affairs, vice president of the executive council, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, and member of the constituent assembly of India.

3. Dr. John Mathai

Dr. Mathai was an economist and the 3rd (22nd September 1949-1st June 1950) finance minister of India. He was also the first railway minister of India. He was born on 10th January 1886 in madras and died in February 1959. He was a member of the Indian National Congress. He has done his education at Madras Christian College and Madras Law College. He got the Padma Vibhushan in 1959. Apart from these, he variously served the country as he was the first Chairman of the State Bank of India as well as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala (first Vice-chancellor) and of the University of Mumbai.

4. Dr. C. D. Deshmukh

Mr. Deshmukh was the 4th (1st June 1950-24th July 1956) finance minister of India. The full name of Mr. Deshmukh was Sri Chintaman Dwarakanath Deshmukh. He was born on 14th January 1896 in Bombay and died on 2nd October 1982. He studied at the University of Cambridge as well as got Padma Vibushan in 1975. Apart from being a finance minister, he served the county variously. From 11th August 1943 - 30th June 1949, he served as the Governor (3rd) of Reserve Bank of India. From 1956 - 1961 he served as the Chairman of the University Grants Commission. And he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi from 1962 -1967.

5. T.T. Krishnamachari

Mr. Krishnamachri served the country two times as a finance minister of India as he was the 6th (30th Aug 1956-14th Feb 1958) and 9th (31th Aug 1963-31st Dec 1965) finance minister of India. He was born in 1899 in madras and died in 1974. He was a politician and a member of the Indian national congress, as well as he was an entrepreneur of the TTK group. He also served the country as a member of parliament, Lok sabha for madras (1951 - 1957), and member of parliament, Lok sabha for madras south (1957 - 1962). But despite so many respectable designations, he was the first minister of independent India who has resigned due to his involvement in a scam.

6. Morarji R. Desai

He was born on 29th February 1896 in Bombay and died on 10th April 1995. He studied at the University of Mumbai. He was an activist and a politician. He was a member of the Janta Party. He got Nishan-E-Pakistan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna in 1991. He also served the country as the home minister, 2nd deputy prime minister, 2nd chief minister of Bombay state, and Member of Parliament, Lok sabha.

7. Sachin Choudhary

8. Smt. Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi was the 3rd prime minister and 12th (16th July 1969-27th June 1970) finance minister of India. Her full name was Indira Priyadarshini Nehru, and she was the daughter of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. She was born on 19th November 1917 and died on 31st October 1984. She was dropped out of Visva-Bharti University and Somerville College, Oxford. She was a member of the Indian national congress and got Bangladesh freedom honor in 2011 and Bharat Ratna in 1971. 9. Y.B.Chavan

Full name of Y.B.chavan was Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan. He was the 13th (27th June 1970-10th Oct 1974) finance minister of India. He was born on 12th March 1913 and died on 25th November 1984. He was a politician, writer, and social activist. He was the leader of the Indian national congress and also called the leader of the common man. He serves the country variously as the 5th deputy prime minister, two times as a minister of home affairs, minister of external affairs, minister of defense, 1st chief minister of Maharashtra, and the 3rd chief minister of Bombay state.

10. C. Subramanian

S, known as Chidambaram Subramanian, was the 14th (10th Oct 1974-24th Mar 1977) finance minister of India. He was born on 30th January 1910 and died on 7th November 2000. He was a politician, writer, and social activist. He was a leader of the Indian national congress and studied at the University of Madras. For playing an important role in the green revolution in India with M.S. Swaminathan, he was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1998. Apart from the finance minister, he served the country as minister of agriculture, deputy chairman of the planning commission, defense minister, and the Governor of Maharashtra. 11. H.M. Patel

Hirubhai Mulljibhai Patel was the 16th (26th March 1977-24th January 1979) finance minister of the country. He was born on 27th August 1904 in Bombay and died on 30th November 1993. He was the leader of the Swatantra party and played a very important role in internal and national security during and after the partition of India. He was a civil servant as well as a politician. 22. Dr. Manmohan Singh
