Difference between Mind and Brain

There is a big difference between Brian and mind. The brain is a part of the human body, and we can touch, see, and feel it. It has a physical existence. But a person cannot touch the mind or see it. It has no physical existence in the human body, however, the human can feel it.

Mind vs Brain

Brain

The brain is an important organ of the body, which controls the body. It is made of nervous tissue and is located in the skull. The skull provides protection to the brain. It contains about 100 billion neurons, but only 15 billion neurons out of 100 billion are active. The remaining 85 billion are not active. The human brain is the most rigid structure in the world. The weight of the brain is 1300 to 1400 grams. It is made up of the central core of tissues, the brain stem, the cerebellum, and the cerebrum. The part that connects the spinal cord and the brain stem is called the medulla oblongata.

The brain is divided into three parts that are midbrain, forebrain, and hindbrain.

1. Forebrain:

The front side part of the brain is called the forebrain. It is also called the prosencephalon. This part is larger than the mid and hind brains. Most neurons are present in the frontal brain. Its parts are diencephalon and cerebrum, which are described below;

i) Diencephalon:

It is located below the cerebrum. The pineal gland and pituitary gland originate from this part. The pituitary gland is considered the master gland. It controls the whole body. Thalamus and hypothalamus are parts of the diencephalon. Thalamus is located in the centre of the brain, and it is working for and near the midbrain. Thalamus is circular in structure, and its work is to recognize pain, cold, heat, etc., and it also carries the sensing signal. Whereas, the hypothalamus controls hunger, thirst, fever, anger, happiness, etc.

ii) Cerebrum:

It is divided into four parts which are the parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, and frontal lobe. The cerebrum is the centre of intellect, memory, sensation, desire, and contemplation. The frontal lobe controls the striated muscles. The sensation of touch, pressure, pain is received by the parietal lobe. Visual sensation is acquired by the occipital lobe.

2. Midbrain:

It is located in the middle of the brain. It is divided into two parts; cerebral peduncle and corpora quadrigemina. The cerebral peduncle is a bundle of fibers. Corpora quadrigemina is considered the center of sight and hearing. After listening and watching, the things go into the brain, and the brain gives a replay.

3. Hindbrain:

This is the last part of the brain. It is made up of the cerebellum and medulla oblongata. The main function of the cerebellum is to maintain the balance of the body. It controls the voluntary muscles of the body. Whereas, the medulla oblongata controls the blood pressure, peristalsis of the alimentary canal, and the heartbeat of the human body.

What is organic brain disorder?

When the cells of the brain stop working or for some reason they become dead then it is called an organic brain disorder. Cerebral diseases, fever, head or brain injury, tumor conditions, metabolic diseases, toxic conditions, and CNS diseases can affect the brain cells and make them unfit to do their work. The organic disorders are Alzheimer's diseases, personality and behavioral disorders, organic amnestic syndrome.

Symptoms of brain disorders:

  • Impairment in cognitive functions, for example, unable to think, loss of memory, not being able to judge anything, etc.,
  • Depression
  • Body imbalance
  • Loss of dexterity, which means losing the skills of doing anything.
  • Impaired processing of incoming information.

Mind

The mind has no physical existence in the human body. The human cannot touch the mind and cannot see it. It is the faculty of the human soul. The mind has stored the memories, gathers the memories, manages the memories, and also recalls the things when required. It has no shape, size and weight. It is related to the mental health of humans. It contains thoughts, emotions, sensations, feelings. It can be of the following types;

1. Conscious mind: it is also called the alert mind. This mind is active only when a person is awake. Every action or activity a person does in the present situation is only because of the conscious mind.

The 5 to 7 percent activity of the human mind is controlled by the conscious mind. All daily activities are performed through the conscious mind like walking, talking, watching, working, etc. The things related to logic and reasoning are contained in this mind.

2. Subconscious mind: This is called the semi-awake mind. This is a part of the mind that contains old memories. Humans intentionally recall old memories and bring those memories to the conscious mind.

It accounts for 93 to 95 percent of the human mind acidity. Daily duties are performed through the subconscious mind like sleeping, dreaming, and daydreaming means watching dreams when a human is awake. All feelings and emotions like happiness, anger, hatred, jealousy, and love come under this mind. This mind mostly thinks about past memories and future activities. It also thinks positive and negative thoughts.

3. Unconscious mind: It is called the unaware mind. This mind contains events that have happened, but humans don't remember them. For example, a person does not remember what he did when he was two years old. So this comes into the unconscious mind. It contains memories that are not possible to recall.
