What is the full form of NGRI

NGRI: National Geophysical Research Institute

NGRI stands for National Geophysical Research Institute. It is a geoscientific organization which works under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It is the largest Research and Development organization in India; more than 200 scientists and technical staff are associated with this organization.

Fullform Ngri

It is established in 1961 with an aim to carry out research in multiple fields of highly complex structure and processes of the Earth system and its interlinked subsystems.

It has the authority to conduct research to enable government agencies and other stakeholders use the geo-resources sustainably and improve preparedness and resilience to natural hazards.

The Research of NGRI is focused on various areas. Some of the major research areas are mineral exploration, hydrocarbon and coal exploration, earthquake hazard assessment, seismic sounding studies, study of structure and evolution of earth's interior and geophysical instrument development, etc.

The key methodical core competencies of NGRI are listed below;

  • Seismology, GPS, Paleo-seismology, Structural geology to decipher geodynamics and earthquake hazard
  • Controlled source seismics to outline potential zones for hydrocarbon sources
  • Geochemisty, Geochronology, Paleomagnetism to trace crustal evolution
  • Planetary geology to study the history of Earth's formation
  • Geomagnetism; It helps find out the changes in the Earth's magnetic field
  • Airborne geophysics; It helps in groundwater and mineral exploration
  • Hydrochemistry; It helps in groundwater pollution studies

Major facilities

Some of the major facilities available at NGRI are given below;

  • Micro Raman Spectrometer, High pressure laboratory, strain measuring sensors, universal testing machine (100 tons) and Bridgeman-Birch high pressure apparatus
  • Rock magnetism laboratory, digital spinner magnetometer, alternating magnetic field and thermal demagnetizers
  • Mineral Physical Laboratory equipped with Micro-Roman spectrometer, high-pressure Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC), and ultra high-resolution double monochorometer
  • Centralized computing facilities: PC-LAN and an arrangement of Sun Workstations
  • Tritium and carbon dating laboratory for groundwater studies
  • Seismological, Magnetic and Gravity observatories
  • Gas Chromotography and Microbial Laboratory
