Paraphrase for Me

What is Paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing refers to the process of converting someone else's ideas into your own words without changing the real meaning of the text. In other words, paraphrasing is similar to quotation as it includes copying another publishers' identical words and pasting them in quotation marks. In academic writings, paraphrasing is preferred over quoting. This is because paraphrasing makes the work understandable and keeps it more original. It is critical to cite the source whenever you paraphrase. The use of simplification must also be avoided while paraphrasing a text.

How to Paraphrase?

There are some easy steps given below which can be used to paraphrase a text:

  1. The first most step while paraphrasing is doing a close reading of the original text to understand the meaning clearly.
  2. After completing the close reading, write down some important points and terms as per your memory to summarize the whole concept. But do not copy the text word to word.
  3. Instead of moving further to paraphrase the passage, first try to make a map of the complete meaning and idea in your mind, and then you may note some key ideas and phrases.
  4. Then, find out whether the text is formal or informal. If it is informal, then you can skip some common points and work on the strategy of choice and summarize to get the useful material. On the other hand, if the text is formal, then it is advisable to paraphrase the entire text.
  5. Now you are ready to write the different versions of the original text in your own words. But for this, you will not look at the original text to avoid plagiarism.
  6. After completing the writing, match your work with the original text to make sure that it is plagiarism-free. In case if it has plagiarism, then try to remove it by using different tips that are given further in this article.
  7. In the end, don't forget to cite the source from where you collect the information.

Tips for Paraphrasing

At first, the steps of paraphrasing may seem to be easy but converting a published idea into your own words in such a way that there will be the least scope for plagiarism is not so much straightforward.

Here, some tips are given which you can apply while paraphrasing a text:

  1. Use a different point to write the first sentence: You should never start your passage from the same point as it is given in the original text while paraphrasing it.
  2. Prefer the use of synonym: Synonym refers to the two or more words or phrases which meaning is exactly or nearly the same in the same language. If you don't have a good collection of synonyms, you may take the help of a tool name thesaurus. But you are not allowed to overuse the synonyms because some keywords should be kept as it is.
  3. Change the structure of the sentence: Changing the structure of the sentence can also be helpful in avoiding plagiarism. For this purpose, you may:
    • Convert the active voice into passive voice: When a sentence is written in such form that it is led by the subject (the person or thing which is doing the action or performing the task), then it is known as active voice. On the other hand, when a sentence is written in such form that it is led by the object (the person or thing who is receiving the action or task), then it is known as passive voice.
    • Convert the direct speech into indirect speech: When a speech or comment is described in the same words as it was said by the speaker, it is called a direct speech. On the other hand, when a speech or comment is repeated by describing or reporting it without directly quoting it and changing the actual information, it is called indirect speech. Usually, a direct speech is closed in inverted commas, while an indirect speech is written by using the connecting word "that" (some cases have exceptions also).
  4. Change the order of the sentences: You may also paraphrase the passage by changing the order of the given sentences. For example, in a passage, an incident is described in such an order that 'when it happened?' is given before 'how it happened?' so while paraphrasing the passage, you may describe 'how it happened?' first and 'when it happened?' later.
  5. Convert long sentences into small and vice versa: While paraphrasing a passage, the number of words should roughly be the same as given in the original piece of information. So, you are free to play with the number of sentences to make it different. To do this task, you may break a long sentence into two small sentences and also may make a single sentence by adding two short sentences.
  6. Use antonym: The use of antonym is quite tricky and is not appropriable in all conditions. This is because if you are using an antonym, you have to insert or remove a negative word in your sentence (no or not). Other than this, the use of an antonym may also change the meaning of the sentence in some cases. For example, if we say, 'he is intelligent,' it depicts the quality of being wise. On the other hand, if we use the antonym and say, 'he is not stupid,' it implies that he is not a fool, but it means not that he is intelligent. Therefore, we can see how the meaning of the sentence can also be changed in some cases while using the antonym. That's why their use is not always preferable.

Difference between Paraphrasing and Quoting

Paraphrasing and quoting both have their separate uses. At first, they both may seem to be similar, but there is a huge difference between them which can be understood as follows:

Paraphrasing Quoting
Paraphrasing demonstrates that you fully comprehend the meaning of a text. Quoting means providing a detailed definition of a certain topic.
Throughout your article, your voice will be the most prominent in paraphrasing. Expressing an opinion on the author's language or style is the main purpose of quoting.
The paraphrased content is more readable. The quoted content is less readable.
It focuses on describing a published idea in different words. It focuses on evaluating or critiquing a specific assertion.

Difference between Paraphrasing and Summarizing

The terms "paraphrase" and "summarize" are not interchangeable. However, both are commonly referred to as paraphrase (as is the case at many institutions). The difference between them is given below:

Paraphrasing Summarizing
A paraphrase is a rewrite of a specific paragraph from someone else ideas and thoughts. A summary is when you entirely or partially describe the outcome of a more substantial component of the investigation.
The length of the paraphrased text is roughly the same as the original source. The length of the summary is generally less than the original text.
Summarizing is not required while paraphrasing a text. Paraphrasing is required while summarizing a text.
It describes almost all the points given in the text. It describes only major points, themes, or central ideas of the text.
Paraphrasing is useful when you want to focus on only one part or piece of the research article. Summarizing is useful when you want to figure out the meaning of the entire research article.
