PHP in_array() function

The in_array( ) function is an inbuilt function of PHP. It is used to search an array for a specific value. If the third parameter strict is set to true, the in_array( ) function will also check the types of the $values.

Syntax

Parameter

Parameter	Description	Is compulsory
value	Specifies the value to be searched in the array.	compulsory
array	Specifies an array.	compulsory
strict	If this parameter is set, the in_array( ) function searches for the search-string and specific type in the array.	Optional

Returns

The function returns true if the value is found in the array or false otherwise.

Example 1

$record = array(15, 24, 30, 100);
if (in_array("100", $record))
{
echo "found";
}
else
{
echo "not found";
}
?>

found

Example 2

<?php
$company = array("tcs", "infosys", "cognizant", "mindtree");
if (in_array("tcs", $company)) 
{
		echo "Got job";
	}
if (in_array("mindtree", $company)) 
{
		echo "Got innovation";
	}
?>

Output:

Got jobGot innovation

<?php
$player = array("sachin", "virat", "ganguly", "sehwag");
if (in_array("sachin", $player))
{
echo "great player";
}
else
{
		echo "Match not found";
	}
?>

Output:

great player

Example 4

$sports = array("cricket", "football", "hockey", 90);
if (in_array("football", $sports, TRUE))
	{
		echo "found \n";
	}
else
	{
		echo "not found \n";
	}
if (in_array("90", $sports, TRUE))
	{
		echo "found \n";
	}
else
	{
		echo "not found \n";
	 }
?>

Output:

found not found
