TPACK: Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge

TPACK stands for Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge. It is an idea in which technology is used in the process of teaching and learning to incorporate a better educational experience. The technology in this model is used to provide instructors with better resources to structure the classroom to achieve better results which the new generation demands. Mishra and Koehler developed this method in the year 2006.

All three aspects, i.e. pedagogy, content and technology, are integrated to form a dynamic framework like TPACK.

The model TPACK with these three main components, such as the content, pedagogy and technology, emphasize the connections, interactions, and constraints to help teachers work in all three of these knowledge areas accordingly.

Content: Through the content, instructors describe what they have to teach, what kind of study material they have to use and which subject they need to teach.

Pedagogy: In pedagogy, instructors determine what methods will be chosen to teach, which method will be used, etc. These methods and practices usually depend on the type of students the instructors have. Teaching can be done through lectures, project tasks or something practical.

Technology: In technology, instructors determine what technical resources they can use to teach students. For example, laptops or desktops help create presentations and can make learning easier in the classroom. Instructors nowadays are using various technological tools and devices to conduct online classes, such as mobile phones and, most importantly internet. These are some of the technical resources that anyone can use in teaching.

Content Knowledge

Content knowledge refers to the teachers' understanding of the subject matter they will be teaching.

There are different subjects to teach at the present time; about eight subjects are taught to the children every day. It includes Science, English, Maths, Hindi, etc. Therefore, the content knowledge of each subject will be different from the others; the content knowledge of science cannot be the same for mathematics.

Therefore, it becomes very important for teachers to have proper knowledge of the subjects they are teaching, such as the principles, concepts and ideas behind the corresponding subject.

Pedagogical Knowledge

Pedagogical knowledge refers to the teacher's knowledge regarding his teaching method and learning about different processes and practices. In simple terms, it means how the teacher who has knowledge about the subject will convey that knowledge and content to the students.

Not every subject or topic can be taught to them using a whiteboard; sometimes, practical teaching is also needed.

Pedagogical knowledge also includes what content, material, and learning theories like cognitive theory or constructive theory should be adopted.

Technology Knowledge

Now, when you know what content instructors need to teach and what pedagogy they need to use to elaborate that content. It has now become crucial for instructors to think and work with all the technology tools and services available to teach.

In other words, it also means adapting the changes made in the information technology field to achieve goals. For instance, teaching students through slides made by teachers and presenting them through a projector.

The teacher should have the knowledge of which technology they should use to teach their content effectively to the students.

Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK)

PCK means that the teacher has the knowledge of the subject matter and also has the knowledge of different ways to represent that subject matter to the students.

Technological Content Knowledge (TCK)

It says that the teacher should have deep knowledge of the subject matter, and he should also know which technological method he can use to teach the subject matter to the students effectively.

A teacher also needs to acquire knowledge about how technology and content affect education and how they are helpful to each other.

Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK)

It says that the teacher should have knowledge while adopting any technology and which strategy of pedagogy can be used in the classroom while teaching.

It also includes realizing how teaching and learning change when particular technological tools are used for teaching.

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)

Technological pedagogical content knowledge refers to teaching instructional material using pedagogical techniques that involve the use of technologies in order to make the teaching and learning process easy and effective.

It is an attempt to make complex concepts easy for students to teach and support students to build or boost their knowledge upon their existing knowledge.
