UNIDO: United Nations Industrial Development Organization

UNIDO stands for United Nations Industrial Development Organization. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It aims to promote and accelerate industrial development in member countries for poverty reduction, complete globalization and environmental sustainability. UNIDO was established in 1966. It became the specialized agency of the United Nations in 1985. It is the only organization of the UNITED NATION which focuses on poverty reduction by creating wealth through manufacturing.

Fullforms Unido

Its mission, as described in the Lima Declaration, is to promote and speed up inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in the Member States. It believes that ISID is the major factor for the sustainable development for the benefit of the future generation.

As of 2017, LI Yong is the Director General of UNIDO. Its headquarters is located in Vienna and the liaison offices are located in Brussels, Geneva and New York. The liaison offices maintain the contacts with the United Nations organizations and member states. It also has 47 field offices (regional and country offices) to maintain a field network across the world. As of January 2017, UNIDO has 168 member states.

Structure

UNIDO has two policy-making bodies (the General Conference and the Industrial Development Board) and a Programme and Budget Committee which is a subsidiary body of the Industrial Development Board. There are around 700 staff members in UNIDO which are working at the Headquarters and other offices across the world. Its programmes are mainly focused on least developed countries, agro-based industries, and small and medium enterprises.

  • To generate and disseminate industry related knowledge
  • To provide a platform to member states and other partners to enhance cooperation and establish communication and partnerships
  • To design and implement programmes to accelerate the growth of industry in developing and transition economies.
