As per the agile methodology, the developer team accepts the feedback and starts working on the changes and errors. After applying changes and removing errors from small parts of the software, it again delivers small parts to the customers to get their feedback and work continuously on the parts till the entire project is completed with minimum error.

What is the meaning of DevOps?

Software development consists of two distinct departments:

  1. The development teams plan, design, and develop the system from start to finish.
  2. The operations team allows for testing and implementation of the created software. The operations team gives feedback to the development team about any errors or bugs in the product that needs to be fixed or any other work that needs to be done.

These two departments came together to work in collaboration with each other, which is called the DevOps approach.

DevOps is a software development methodology that is used as a set of practices and tools. It integrates and automates the software development task to improve the system development life cycle.

The DevOps approach enables companies to adapt quickly to updates and changes. Teams can deliver products to the customer quicker, and deployments are more consistent and seamless. It manages streamlined flow between teams and aims to create a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and automation.

It is implemented in several stages with the help of various tools:

Planning phase: In this stage, the development team discusses the basic requirements of the software as per the purpose of the software, which is to be delivered to the customer.

Coding phase: Once the planning is done, the coding phase comes into light. The development team starts writing the code for the software using the programming language chosen to write the code.

Build phase: In this stage, the code is made executable with the help of the tools like Gradle and Maven.

Testing phase: After the code is successfully built, the software is deployed to the test environment, where the software is tested for any errors or bugs. The build and testing stage is called Continuous Integration (CI).

Release phase: It is the stage where the build is prepared for deployment to the production environment.

Deployment phase: After the code passes various manual and automated tests; the code is deployed. The release plus deploy process is called Continuous Deployment (CD).

Operation phase: The software is sent to the operations team after deployment. The code is deployed to the working environment in this stage.

Monitoring phase: In this phase, the product is continuously monitored, and the feedback received after this stage is sent back to the planning phase, forming the life cycle of DevOps.

Difference between Agile and DevOps

DevOps has become prevalent in current years as organizations seek to improve their software delivery processes, increase collaboration between development & operations teams, and increase agility. It is a holistic approach to software development that combines technical practices, cultural norms, and organizational structures to enable fast, reliable, and high-quality software delivery.

Benefits of DevOps:

  • Release Velocity: It means how fast the code is released to production. DevOps provides practices that help in increasing the release velocity.
  • Development Cycle: The entire development cycle from design to deployment becomes shorter with DevOps.
  • Deployment Rollback: In DevOps, deployment rollback is planned for any failure due to a bug or error in the code.
  • Defect Detection: It can detect defects much before the release of the product, which improves the quality of the software.
  • Recovery from failure: If a failure occurs, the DevOps process allows for faster recovery from that failure.
  • Collaboration: DevOps increases collaboration between the development teams and operations teams.
  • Performance Oriented: In DevOps, the organization focuses on performance, due to which teams are more innovative and productive.

It is a combination of two departments, namely the development team and the operations team, which work together to complete the product swiftly and efficiently.

The objective is to deliver working software quickly and repeatedly. Its aim is to rapidly deliver consistent software with high quality and reliability.
The size of the agile team is small. In DevOps, the size of the team is large.
It delivers small units of a product called sprints every few weeks. It delivers the code on a daily basis as soon as it is ready.
In Agile, the customer provides feedback that is important to the development team. In DevOps, the operations team provides feedback to the development team.
It does not focus on automation. It focuses on automation to automate the entire product from code testing to deployment using automated tools.
It uses tools like Jira, Active Collab, Trello, ClickUp, etc. It uses tools like Docker, AWS, Jenkins, GitLab, Puppet, Maven, etc.
