AIAAA: American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

AIAAA stands for American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is a leading technical society based in America, dedicated to the global aerospace profession and aerospace engineering. It was established in 1963 by the merger of two aerospace societies: the American Rocket Society (ARS) and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences (IAS). As of 2015, it has more than 30,000 individual members and 95 corporate members. Its mission is to advance and inspire the future of aerospace for the benefit of humanity. Its tagline is "Shaping the future of Aerospace".

History

The Institute of the Aerospace Sciences (IAS), previously known as the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences, and the American Rocket Society (ARS), previously known as the American Interplanetary Society (AIS), converged to turn into the AIAA in 1963. The organization's initial executive director was Paul Johnston. After 18 months, Jim Harford took his position. The newly established structure brought together the AIAA Journal and 47 technical committees. In 1963, the AIAA Student Journal also debuted. The organisations' prior headquarters buildings were also sold as a result of the merger, and their offices were moved to the Sperry Rand Building.

CEO of Aurora Flight Sciences John Langford was chosen as the AIAA's new president in April 2017.

Competitions

The AIAA sponsors design competitions and design/build/fly competitions every year to give engineering students, including undergraduates and graduates, the chance to validate their analytic studies and get real-world design experience.

The Foundation for AIAA

More than 6,500 student members of AIAA currently belong to 160 active student branches, including 12 clubs for international students. Annual conferences are held by the student branches.

The AIAA Foundation is committed to advancing the knowledge of current and aspiring aerospace professionals. Numerous undergraduate and graduate scholarships are funded by the AIAA Foundation. Scholarships for undergraduate study range from $2,000 to $2,500. $5,000 or $10,000 are offered as graduate awards.

• Reed Aeronautics Award: This award is named after Dr. Sylvanus A. Reed.
• Holt Ashley Award for Aeroelasticity: This award was named after Prof. Holt Ashley for his dedication towards the advancement of aerospace science and engineering.
• Missile Systems Award: This award is presented by AIAA during its Space and Astronautics Forum. It is generally presented in two categories: Technical and Management.
• Wyld Propulsion Award: This award is presented by AIAA annually for its remarkable achievement in the development of the application of rocket propulsion systems. It is named after James Hard Wyld to honour him for his achievements.
