ISIS: Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It is also famously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. It possesses a violent ideology and claims to be a caliphate, and they hence consider their religious authority over all the Muslims. Although al-Qaida inspired it, they were later expelled.

ISIS Full Form

ISIS is known for its ruthless and vicious violence and life-taking assaults on the general citizens of the country. They have now destroyed many of the heritage monuments, ancient temples and other important buildings of national importance or some other work of art from antiquity. Along with this, they also assert the conduct of hundreds of terrorist attacks all around the globe.

ISIS intelligently uses various social media platforms for raising funds and getting recruitment done. However, the group's instability occurred due to the Middle East regional problem.

Formation of the ISIS

It was in 2004 when al Qaeda was formed. ISIS has a connection with the organization of al Qaeda. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi created the militant group ISIS, and he was initially part of al Qaeda. The aim of al Qaeda, when the US invasion of Iraq began in 2003, was to get rid of Western control or authority and to restore Sunni Islamist rule. This group was renamed "ISI" when Abu Ayyub al-Masri of Egypt became the new leader post the assassination of Zarqawi in the U. S. airstrike in 2006. ISI stands for "Islamic State of Iraq". The leadership soon went on to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, after Masri's death in a US-Iraqi operation in 2010. The ISI also confronted Syria and gained control over the country. After successful taking over possession in Syria, they renamed themselves "ISIS" or "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" as they had reached out to Syria.

Many names of ISIS

ISIS has been known by many other names since its establishment. The terms are as follows:

  1. ISIL: It is an abbreviation for "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant". The region in the Levant is an area including Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel and Jordon.

  3. Daesh: Middle Eastern and Europeans make use of this phrase, i.e. "al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham". The term means Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. But, ISIS did not recognize the name and terrorized to cut tongue to whoever addressed them as Daesh.

ISIS and Sharia Law

As soon as ISIS settled its rule in Iraq and Syria, it concentrated on the formation of an Islamic state and initiated the application of Sharia law. Sharia is a religious law which is relied upon Islamic rules and practices. After presiding over Falluja, Mosul and Tikrit in Iraq, ISIS announced itself as a caliphate and hence ruled by a Caliph. A caliphate is a political and religious territory; the head is known as Caliph.
