MES: Military Engineering Service

MES stands for military engineering service. It was first established in 1923. During this program, the engineers of the Indian army help to give technical and engineering support to the armed forces. It is the best and one of India's largest construction and supportive agencies.

It has a large number of battalions and subunits spread across the country to provide engineering support to various sections of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Ordnance Factories, KV Organisation, Border Roads Organization, and DRDO organizations. MES is a military organization, but its commanders and other subordinate staff comprise both Army and Civilian personnel. While contracts are used to carry out all building work, department-employed labor (DEL) force is also used to carry out several maintenance services.

The combined responsibilities of MES include providing engineering advice and carrying out the work. All works, buildings, airfields, dock installations, etc., in addition to necessary services like military roads, bulk water and electricity supply, drainage, refrigeration, and furniture, needed by the Army, Navy, and Air Force in India, are designed, built, and maintained by the MES engineers. The Engineer-in-Chief, who serves as the Ministry of Defence's and the three Services' go-to expert on construction engineering in war and peace, has overall command over the MES. The Engineer-in-Chief of MES is aided by six Command Chief Engineers, who, in turn, supervise 31 Zonal Chief Engineers and the CWEs and independent GEs within each zone.

History about MES

On September 26, 1923, the Secretary of the State of India established MES and placed it under the direction of an Engineer-in-Chief, bringing together civilian staff and members of the Royal Corps of Engineers.

The group was established more than 200 years ago to maintain the nation's infrastructure, both civic and military. Until the 18th century, it was a division of the army known as the Public Works Department (PWD), which the Indian Corps of Engineers ran under the command of a military board. The PWD continued to be in charge of military and civil works after coming under civilian authority in 1851.

The Indian Army's Corps of Engineers supports engineering research and development for the armed forces through the MES. It is an organization that was originally founded as a construction agency. Even though it was founded as a military institution, civilians could work as officers and support personnel. With a budget of over 13,000 crores each year, the MES is one of India's largest government construction and maintenance organizations. It is in charge of all three services' strategic and operational infrastructure, including the buildings that house their homes, offices, and other facilities, and any affiliated Ministry of Defence organizations.

Directorate of Combat Engineers

• Controlling all engineers' aspects of General Staff policy, combining operational planning, intelligence, and logistics planning.

Age Limit and Qualification Requirement

Interested candidates can apply for MES whenever a circular or vacancy is released by the concerned bodies. However, there are certain criteria with which one must be eligible. Notably, persons with a minimum age of 18 years and maximum age of 30 years can apply for various posts in MES. However, relaxation may be given to specific reserved categories. On the other hand, the qualification or educational requirements depend from post to post.

Salary Expectation

In India, a mid-career MES engineer with 4-9 years of experience can earn an average salary of 6 to 7 lakhs per annum. However, an experienced MES engineer with 10-20 years of experience can earn even more than this, typically an average salary of over seven lakhs per annum.
