YMCA: Young Men's Christian Association

YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association. The Young Men's Christian Association was established by George Williams and by his 11 friends. It is a global youth organization in which more than 64 million beneficiaries are enrolled from more than 120 countries. The YMCA (also known as the Y) is mainly located in Geneva, Switzerland.

Williams spread the youth organization at the global level in significantly less time. In local regions, YMCAs offer a variety of youth programs involving sporting facilities, skill-building seminars, Christian outreach, humanitarian action, as well as training and services aimed towards youth development.

Each autonomous local YMCA is a member of its national organization, a non-governmental federation known as the YMCA. A Brief History of YMCA

Young Men's Christian Association was mainly founded by the famous businessman George Williams. He started this association with his 11 buddies. He all worked like a team and established the YMCA. They were concerned that there weren't many healthy choices for young guys to make in big cities; the only places they could go were typically bars and brothels. Williams' concept came from gatherings he conducted with his co-workers at a company in London for prayer and Bible reading.

Moreover, he organized the first conference that resulted in the establishment of the YMCA, with the intention of "improving the spiritual condition of young men employed in the drapery, needlework, and other industries". From 1851 until his passing in 1885, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, served as the YMCA's founding leader.

YMCA Movement

The Great Exhibition of 1851, the first of several World's Fairs staged in London's Hyde Park, was partially responsible for the YMCA's international expansion. Later that year, YMCAs opened in other countries like Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Henry Dunant, the YMCA Geneva's secretary, who subsequently founded the International Committee of the Red Cross and received the first Nobel Peace Prize, was the driving force behind the notion of establishing a genuinely worldwide movement with a global headquarters. YMCA Paris agreed to host the YMCA World Conference inaugural after Dunant persuaded the organization.

The conference was held before the Exposition Universelle in August 1855 and had 99 young participants from nine different nations. They spoke about forming a federation to improve collaboration between various YMCA societies. The World Alliance of YMCAs was officially launched as a result. The conference endorsed the Paris Basis, a shared purpose for all current and future national YMCAs. Its slogan, "That they all may be one", was derived from the Bible.

Other international organizations, like the World YWCA, the World Council of Churches, and the World Student Christian Federation, included components of the Paris Basis in their original mission statements.

The World Council at Oaxtepec, Morelos, Mexico, urged for a diplomatic resolution to the Middle East conflict in 2002. On July 12, 2010, the YMCA of the USA changed its name to the well-known term "The Y" and updated its famous red and black emblem to include five other colors. No matter your ability, age, culture, ethnicity, gender, color, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background, YMCAs are now accessible to everyone worldwide.

Togo's Carlos Sanvee was elected as the organization's first African Secretary General during the 19th World Council conference in Chiang Mai in 2018. Patricia Pelton of Canada was elected as the first female president of the World YMCA during the same World Council gathering.

In contrast to Springfield College, Sir George Williams College, which was one of the two institutions that later became Concordia University, offered night courses. After that, another university was opened in Boston that was named the Northeastern University, and later on, Franklin University started as the YMCA School of Commerce. On November 1 in the year 1881, in San Francisco, another university was opened under the name Golden Gate University. It was established as a result of the YMCA Night School.

In the year 1969, Young Men's Christian Association established the University in India as the name of YMCA University of the Science of Technology. It is located in the state of Haryana in the city of Faridabad. It is noted as one of the best engineering universities in India, and it provides various courses related to the science and engineering field.

In the city of America, high school students were given a chance to participate in the YMCA Youth and Government program.
