What are Roman Numerals?

Roman numeral system was developed following specific rules that describe the correct way of adding and subtracting different Roman letters. This system carries combinations of a varied or specific collection of letters taken from the Latin alphabet to represent Numbers. The modern Roman system uses seven English characters to represent the fixed integer value. Please refer to the below table.

Calculating the value of XXXVII in Roman numerals

In roman numerals, the value of XXXVII can be found using the Roman addition rule. This addition can be done in many ways, as explained below.

Way 1: In this method, we will separate each Roman numeral and find their equivalent numerical value, and later will add all the digits to get the output.

⇒ X+ X+ X+ V+I+I

Converting to their equivalent numerical values, we will get the below numbers

=>10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 37

By adding, all the digits the sum comes out to be 37.

Way 2: In this method, we will group all the first three and the last three roman numerals together and latter will add the groups of letters:

XXXVII = (X + X+ X) + (V+I + I) = (10+ 10 + 10) + (5 + 1 +1) = 30 + 7 = 37

Therefore, we can conclude that

XXXVII = 37

You can use the above techniques to convert any roman letter to numbers.

Rules of Roman Numerals

Rule 1:

Repeating a Roman numeral denotes the addition of its value

Explanation: It means we are supposed to add the letters in the order of their appearance.

Example: III => I + I + I => 1+ 1 + 1 => 3

VI => V + 1 => 5 + 1 => 6

Rule 2:

Any Roman Symbol is not repeated more than three times

Explanation: It means you are allowed to add any same number not more than three times.

Example: This is the reason why we cannot represent 'IIII' as Roman 4. It is a wrong numerical denotation

Rule 3:

In Roman notation, if you write a smaller roman numeral to the left of a larger numeral, it signifies subtraction.

Explanation: If we write a smaller roman number to the left of any larger numeral, the output would be the difference of larger and smaller numeral.

Example: IV => V- I => 5-1 => 4

IX => X-I => 10-1 =>9

Rule 4:

Writing a smaller number to the right of a larger numeral represents addition.

Explanation: In the above example, we learned if we add a smaller number to the left of a larger roman number, we subtract, but if we add any smaller numeral to the right of a large numeral, we do addition.

Example: VI => V + I => 5 + 1 => 6

How to convert Roman numerals to Numbers?

So far, we have learned that the roman numerals are taken for Latin alphabets, but not all the English letters exist in the Roman alphabets. In Roman letters are the 23 roman letters, whereas in English, there are 26 alphabets. Therefore it means 3 English letters, namely J, U, and W, are not studied as a Roman numeral. Below are the ordered representation of 23 Roman letters:

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Y, and Z.

Roman numbers are acquired using the above letter. For instance, the year 2021 in Roman will be written as MMXXI. First, let's discover the representation of roman numbers in the sequence of ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. Consider the following table:
