AMIE: Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers

AMIE stands for Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers. It is a professional certification given by the Institution of Engineers India Limited (IEIL). This is an important degree for students who are unable to pursue a regular engineering degree from a Technical University or Engineering College in India. This certification is considered the equivalent to the degree of engineering including the major streams of engineering like Electronics, Mechanical and Computer Science. Once a student completes this certification, he can opt for the Masters Degree from any recognized university. He can also work in various government or private sector companies in his field of specialization.

AMIE full form

There are two types of membership in this certification:

  1. Technician Member: Its minimum criteria is to pass at least the 12th standard with a 45% minimum aggregate.
  2. Senior Technician Member: There are two mandatory qualifications held for becoming a senior technician member.

Note: The candidate's age must be at least 18 years and the candidate should have a diploma or degree in technology or engineering valid by the council.

Exams

The exams of AMIE are held two times a year in summer and winter or June and December respectively. The date and details of the exam are released in the Technical Journal. The IEIL has divided the exam into two sections; Section A and Section B.

Section A is mandatory for all candidates. In Section B, the candidate is supposed to choose a specific branch of the engineering program. After passing section A, the candidate can appear for Section B and if he clears at least 5 papers of Section B, he becomes eligible for the Laboratory experiments. The project work comprises 10 papers; six compulsory and three optional.

Usage

AMIE is totally equivalent to the graduation degree in engineering, even a certified student also can write for the examinations like:

  • Civil services
  • Indian engineering services (IES)
  • Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
  • Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
  • Common Admission Test (CAT)

How do I get this certification?

Passing the Institution's Section A, Project Work, and Section B exams will get you the qualification. You can join the Institution of Engineers as an Associate Member if you pass both examination portions (AM).

Is B Tech the same as AMIE?

B Tech is the same as AMIE. It is, nonetheless, ongoing education. It follows that applicants who are currently employed in the engineering industry should pursue AMIE. After passing Section A and applying for Section B, you must complete a certificate of job engagement that is provided on the form.

A single exam allows you to take a maximum of four subjects. You must submit an application for re-registration if you are unable to complete the required portions within the allotted period.

The AMIE syllabus:

The subjects in Section A total four (Diploma stream). You will be permitted to take the Section B exam after Section A. There are 9 papers in all, 6 of which are required and 3 of which are optional. The student will be allowed to participate in project work and laboratory experiments after passing at least 5 section-B papers in the relevant branch.
