History

BJP Full Form

The origin of the BJP lies with the foundation of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in collaboration with RSS. With the end of the Emergency in 1977, Bharatiya Jana Sangh was merged with Janta Party, which defeated the incumbent congress government in the 1977's Lok Sabha elections. In 1980, after completing three years in power, the Janta Party was rechristened into the present-day Bharatiya Janta Party after the merger of the Socialist Party, Congress(O) and Bharatiya Lok Dal.

The primary agenda of the party since its inception in 1951 was the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, opposing cow-slaughtering and removing the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Journey of BJP

The first President of the BJP was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The newly formed BJP, apart from its earlier forms, was seen as moderated by the plan of Hindu nationalism because, this time, it wanted to cover a more vast area of the country. So, it came up with the objective of Gandhian Socialism, which didn't help it much as it won just two seats in 1984's Lok Sabha elections.

After the 1984 elections defeat, BJP strategised its agenda and launched Ram Janmabhoomi Movement in Uttar Pradesh. This helped the party to gain some momentum that resulted in getting in power in some states, and by 1996, it became one of the largest parties and remained in power in Central Government just for 13 days as it could not prove its majority.

BJP led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to win the 1999's Lok Sabha elections with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Prime Minister, and later, he completed his first five-year term. This was the first time a non-Congress party completed its full term at the Centre.

In the subsequent 2004's Lok Sabha elections, BJP faced defeat, and the Congress regained power with Dr Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister. The Congress party completed its term in 2009, again winning the 2009's Lok Sabha elections, and continued its 2nd term.

On the back of that, even after getting defeated in the Lok Sabha elections, BJP continued its efforts, made its space in the state legislative elections, and got in power in different states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, etc.

Due to better developmental works in different states and its Hindutva ideology, BJP started getting acknowledgement and support from the public, which increased its chance of getting into the central government in the 2014's Lok Sabha elections.

In 2014, BJP won the Lok Sabha elections and came into power in the central government with Shri Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister. The reason behind the victory of the BJP in the 2014's Lok Sabha election was the popularity of Narendra Modi due to his developmental work in Gujarat as Chief Minister, and the second reason was the continuous efforts of all the party members of the BJP at all levels.

Ideology of BJP

BJP works on the philosophy of "integral humanism", which was first given by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in 1965. The party also focuses on the philosophy of Hindutva, coined by V.D Savarkar. Hindutva is the concept of abstaining from the change of culture due to westernisation; it does not relate to only people of the Hindu religion; it applies to every citizen of India.

BJP has always criticised Congress, stating its policy as "pseudo-secularism", whereas BJP always insisted its policy be positive secularism. Vajpayee said that BJP's policy is based on Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava, which means to have equal respect for all religions. He opposed European secularism, which talks about the independence of religion.

Organisation Structure

  • The hierarchy of the BJP includes the President as the highest position in the party, which can be any qualified person in the party for a maximum of two consecutive terms for three years each.
  • The second level of hierarchy includes National Executives, mainly the party's senior leaders.
  • There is a Parliamentary Board which is the party's governing body for monitoring and taking daily decisions for the party. The board is presided by the President of the party and includes national executives as its members.
  • Central Election Committee is the committee of national executives responsible for making decisions about the allocation of seats and candidates for Parliamentary and state legislative elections.
  • National Council is the highest decision-making body of the BJP, responsible for making policies for the party, ratifying amendments to the party's constitution, etc. A similar body is present at the state level called State Council to take such a decision at the state level.
  • At the state level, the party's hierarchy consists of a District committee, Mandal Committee, and then comes the Local committee.
