What is the full form of BNHSBNHS: Bombay Natural History SocietyBNHS stands for Bombay Natural History Society. It is one of the largest non-government organizations in India engaged in biodiversity conservation and biodiversity research. It is based in Mumbai, India. It aims to conserve the nature mainly the biological diversity through actions based on research, education, public awareness, etc. Its mission is to become an independent scientific organization for the conservation of threatened species and habitats. The organization was established on 15 September 1883. It was started by eight naturalists of Mumbai including two Indian naturalists; Dr. Atmaram Pandurang and Dr. Sakharam Arjun. It believes that the conservation should be based on scientific research. BNHS is a partner of BirdLife International in India and designated as a "Scientific and Industrial Research Organization" (SIRO) by the Department of Science and Technology. Many famous naturalists like ornithologists Salim Ali and S. Dillon Ripley are associated with this organization. The logo of BNHS is inspired from the great hornbill named William. It lived in the society premises from 1894 until 1920. The logo was created in 1933 on the silver-jubilee of the Society; a hornbill is shown in the logo in the memory of William. Today, BNHS is active at various places across the country including diverse habitats like grasslands, wetlands, forests, deserts and mountains. More than 150 scientists and professionals work with BNHS on research, conservation and nature education.
