CAT: Common Admission Test

CAT stands for Common Admission Test. This competitive test is conducted by Indian Institute of Management to provide admissions for various management programs for IIMs and Non-IIM institutes. It is the most popular management aptitude test among prospective management students as it is accepted by most of the renowned management institutes of India in addition to IIMs.

Usage

Cracking CAT is the only way to get admission to Indian Institute of Management. If you want to take admission to any of the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) or other prestigious management colleges, you have to clear CAT. Furthermore, each institute has its own parameters to select candidates in addition to the CAT score. The common parameters that are usually considered along with CAT scores are written tests, group discussions, personal interviews, academic performance, work experience, etc. The exam is only given once a year.

Qualifications needed to participate in the CAT

To be eligible for the CAT, an aspirant has to be passed or be taking their bachelor's final year exams with at least a 50% overall score. The degree must be awarded by a university that is recognized as accredited by the Ministry of HRD of the Government of India, or that has been incorporated or proclaimed to be so under Section 3 of the UGC Act of 1956.

How soon should I begin preparing for the CAT?

At least a year should be spent studying for a test. Due to rising competition and peer pressure, it is advised that CAT hopefuls begin their preparation at least 11 to 12 months before the exam.
