What is the full form of EBC

EBC: Economically Backward Classes

EBC stands for economically backward classes. Those people whose annual family income is less than INR 8,00,000 come under the subcategory of EBC individuals. It is crucial to remember that this group does not belong to any castes classified as SC, ST, or OBC. Additionally, there are significant differences between Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Economically Backward Classes (EBC). This is because, although EBC and MEBC (Most Economically Backward Class) definitions vary from state to state, EWS has a specific definition set forth by the Indian government. However, EBC certificate requirements can vary between states.

EBC Certificate: What is it?

As previously said, one becomes qualified to apply for an EBC Certificate if the individual's family's yearly income is less than INR 8,00,000 and doesn't belong to any of the castes recognized as SC, ST, or OBC. Also, a person must make sure to inquire about any extra requirements or modifications to the eligibility requirements with the department of citizen welfare in the respective state. For instance, even if a candidate's family income is lower than the acceptable standard, some jurisdictions will not issue an EBC certificate if an applicant owns a certain amount of property.

EBC Certificates offer the holder a variety of financial benefits. However, every state has its own specific requirements for the certificate. Despite this, several states provide EBC certificate holders various benefits, including full or partial tuition fee waivers in educational institutions.

Criteria for EBC Certificate Eligibility

Please note that below are some general guidelines for EBC certificate eligibility; however, each state can set its own standards:

  • All sources of the yearly income of the family should not exceed INR 8,00,000.
  • The applicant should own agricultural land of no more than five acres.
  • Additionally, the living residence shall not exceed 1000 square feet.
  • The housing plot should be less than 100 square yards if it is located in a sector of a notified municipality.
  • The residential plot shall be less than 200 square yards if it is located in a non-notified municipality.
