The agency works with its member countries to promote the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy. It acts as an inter-governmental forum that aims to encourage scientific and technical co-operation among member countries related to peaceful use of nuclear technology and power across the world. IAEA was established on 29 July 1957. It is headquartered in Vienna. It has two "Regional Safeguards Offices" located in Toronto, Canada and at Tokyo in Japan. In addition to this, it also has two liaison offices located in New York, United States and in Geneva, Switzerland. The IAEA and its former Director General Mohamed ElBaradei were the winners of the 2005 Nobel peace prize. They won this award for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes. The current Director General (as of 2017) of IAEA is Yukiya Amano, a veteran Japanese diplomat.
