IIM Full Form

As per the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are declared as institutions of national importance. This happened after the passing of the Indian Institutes of Management Act of 2017. The passing of this act gave the IIMs more liberty to make their day-to-day decisions and to function, as the act has transformed the governing body of the IIMs from an IIM council to an IIM coordination forum. Post this change; they had more freedom in deciding their courses, fee structure, and other related matters. As per the ranking taken out based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), used by the Indian Human Resource Development Ministry, some of the top IIMs are among the top 10 ranked management schools in the country. They include IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore and IIM Ahmedabad.

History of IIMs

Post-independence in 1947, the Planning Commission was tasked to look after the nation's development. It was in the late 1950s that the Planning Commission saw the deficiency of managers. To take charge, the Planning Commission called UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Professor George Robbins in 1959. He recommended establishing two high-level management institutes, named Indian Institutes of Management. Hence, the first two IIMs were established in Calcutta and Ahmedabad. After this, slowly and steadily, by getting a review from the committee set and many recommendations, more IIMs got established.

Courses Offered

Most commonly, the IIMs offer educational programs for undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and executive levels. Many of the IIMs offer similar programmes; however, some have a unique combination of subjects for a specialized purpose. Short-term Executive MBA courses are provided in most of the IIMs, along with part-time programmes. Some IIMs also offer Year Integrated Management and Working Managers' Programs.

The admission process followed in IIMs

As IIMs offer various educational programs, the admission procedures for all such offerings are almost the same. For enrolling on the two-year PGP programs, admission is based on the score of the Common Admission Test (CAT). However, for those applying from overseas or who are not residents of India; for them, the score of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is considered instead of CAT. To join the one-year course for experienced executives, GMAT scores are the first requirement.

Besides getting admission to the doctoral program of IIMs, the requirement varies. For some courses, a presentation is to be made, and elsewhere it is to pass the Research Aptitude Test (RAT), which is followed by a round of interviews. Some of the courses also require recommendations from academicians or professionals. Along with the entrance test scores, the candidate's previous profile is also considered during admission.
