RTI: Right to Information

RTI stands for Right to Information. It is a fundamental right under Article 19(1) of the Constitution. It is an Act of the parliament which was passed in 2005 to replace the Freedom of Information Act, 2002. This act empowers citizens of India to get public information which is under the control of government officials. RTI enables an Indian citizen to inspect government work by asking them to provide the copies of government documents.

This Act is applicable to all states and union territories of India except the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Act helps promote transparency and accountability in government institutions and acts as an effective framework for retrieval of information.
