USA: United States of America

USA stands for United States of America. It is also abbreviated as U.S. (United States). It is a country of North America, which is a federal republic of 50 states. It includes 48 conterminous states and Alaska and the island state of Hawaii. It is bordered by Canada on the north, by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, by the Gulf of Mexico on the South and by the Pacific Ocean on the West. Its capital is Washington, D.C.

It is the fourth-largest country in the world after Russia, Canada, and China. It is twice the size of the European Union. The currency of the US is the US dollar (USD). It has no official language, however, English is spoken across the country. Its total geographical area is 9,833,517 sq. km. and total population as of 2020 is 331,002,600. The national bird and symbol of the USA is a bald eagle.

Geography of USA:

It has a diverse topography. In the west, high mountains can be seen, the central part is plain, hills and low mountains are present in the eastern regions. Alaska has rugged mountains and river valleys and Hawaii landscape mostly exhibit volcanic topography. The climate of the U.S. is also diverse. Although it is mostly temperate, it is tropical in Hawaii and Florida, arctic in Alaska, semiarid in the plains and arid in the Great Basin of the southwest.

The country has a diverse landscape that includes tropical beaches in Florida, Rocky Mountains, barren deserts in the West, dense wilderness areas in the Northeast and Northwest. The lowest point is Death Valley that is at -86 meters and the highest peak is Denali that stands at a height of 6,198 meters.

Government of USA:

The citizens of the USA who have completed 18 years of age can vote in the elections to elect President and Vice President of the country. The current president of the USA as of Dec. 2020 is Joe Boyden. The president of the US lives in the White House located in the capital city of Washington, D.C.

The law-making or legislature of the country is Congress of the United States. It comprises two houses; the Senate and the House of Representatives. So, it is known as a bicameral legislature. There are 100 senators in this system; two from each state. The representatives are 435. The supreme court of the US comprises nine justices who are selected by the president but must be approved by Congress.

Economy of the U.S:

It has the largest economy in the world that mainly comprises industrial and service sectors. Its economy is also the most technologically advanced across the world. Some of the major industries include petroleum, automobile, steel, telecommunication, aerospace, food processing, consumer goods, etc.

The natural resources of USA:

Deposits of coal, petroleum and natural gas and various metallic resources like copper, lead, uranium, bauxite, gold, iron, nickel, silver, zinc, tungsten, timber, potash, phosphates, etc.

Natural Hazards in the USA:

Natural hazards are numerous in the US such as hurricanes along the coasts of Gulf of Mexico, flooding and mud slides in California, tornadoes in the Midwest and southeast region. Some other hazards include forest fires in the western part of the country, tsunamis, etc.
