What is the full form of WADA


WADA: World Anti-Doping Agency

WADA stands for World Anti-Doping Agency. It is an international independent agency that aims to prevent the use of drugs in sports. It was established in 1999 with a mission to lead a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport. It gives emphasis on scientific research, education and development of anti-doping capacities. It also monitors the World Anti Doping Code; a document that harmonizes anti-doping policies in all sports and in all countries. It is headquartered at Montreal in Canada. As of 2014, Sir Craig Reedie is the president of WADA.

The logo of WADA is a black background in the form a square with green "equal sign". The square shape represents the customs and rules that define the sport. The black colour is the traditional colour of referee and it also evokes neutrality. The "equal sign" represents fairness and the green colour represents the field of play and evokes nature and health. The play true tag line is derived from WADA's core values and inspires all athletes to play fair.

Brief History

In 1998, the top three riders of the Tour de France were found to have taken the banned drugs. Due to this incident which shook the world of cycling, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to organize a World Conference on Doping to bring together all parties willing to fight against doping.

The first World Conference on Doping in Sports was held on February 2-4, 1999 at Lausanne in Switzerland. It produced the Lausanne Declaration on Doping in Sport and it was decided that an independent international anti-doping agency will be created for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Based on the terms of the Lausanne Declaration, the WADA was established on 10 November 1999 in Lausanne.
