WFP: World Food Programme

WFP stands for World Food Programme. It is a renowned humanitarian organization that aims to fight hunger worldwide by providing food assistance in emergencies and by working with communities to improve nutrition.

It is committed to end hunger and provide food security and nutrition by 2030. On any given day, around 5200 trucks, 20 ships and 70 planes of WFP are always on move to provide food and related assistance to the needy children and people.

WFP works in coordination with its two sister organizations; the "Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations" and the "International Fund for Agriculture Development". It is associated with more than 1000 national and international NGOs to provide food assistance and remove the causes of hunger.

WFP has created an Ethics Office in 2008 to ensure its staff members perform their duties in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and Standards of Conduct for the International Civil Service. The activities of WFP are governed by the WFP Executive Board which has 36 Member States. The board provides intergovernmental support, guidance and supervises the activities of WFP.

The head of WEP is called the Executive Director. He is appointed by the UN Secretary-General and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States. He looks after the administration of the organization and is responsible for the implementation of the WFP projects, programmes and other activities. As of 2017, David Beasley is the Executive Director of WFP.

WFP has no independent source of funds. Its funds come from voluntary contributions; from governments, corporations and individuals; in 2016, it raised US$5.9 billion. It has more than 14,000 staff worldwide. Every year, it purchases more than 2 million metric tons of food 75% of which comes from the developing countries.

WFP mainly focus on emergency assistance, relief and rehabilitation, etc. It is often first on the scene during emergencies to provide food assistance to the victims of drought, war, earthquakes, crop failure and natural disasters, etc. It also undertakes development projects that focus on nutrition of children and mothers, e.g. it runs school feeding programmes; each year, it provides school meals to around 25 million children across 63 countries.
