About the Authors

Serafin Alvarez Quintero (1871-1938) and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero (1873-1944) were both Spanish dramatists. They grew up in Utrera, a small Spanish town in Andalusia near Seville. They started writing plays at a very young age. They were often called the "Golden Boys" of the Madrid theatre. Together, they made approximately 200 plays representing Andalusia's way of life, manners, and vocabulary.

Their first production for the stage, Gilito, was created in 1889. The comedies The Flowers (1901), A Sunny Morning (1905), and The Merry Heart (1906), along with the uncharacteristically serious Malvaloca (1912), are some of the brothers' most famous works. Helen and Harley Granville Barker's (1927-1932) plays were translated into English. At the beginning of the 1950s, the entire collection of plays was released in seven volumes as Obras Completas.

Both of them start by bringing up Laura Llorente and Gonzalo. Old Don Gonzalo and Dona Laura refer to Gonzalo and Laura Llorente as relatives and friends. They discuss Gonzalo and Laura Llorente's terrible love story and share their thoughts. They spoke about Laura Llorente living in Maricela in Valencia. She was referred to in her younger years as "The Silver Maiden" in her neighbourhood. She had jet-black hair and black eyes, making her as beautiful as a lily. She had an incredible physique and was a stunning woman.

Gonzalo, the brave lover, had won her over. He used to ride his horse through the rose garden each morning and throw her a bouquet to catch on her balcony. On her balcony, Laura used to spend most of her time. When Gonzalo rode back on his horse in the late afternoon, she would throw the flowers back to him. They had an intense love affair. However, Laura's parents wanted their daughter to marry a wealthy local businessman.

One day, Gonzalo got into an argument with the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper insulted him while Gonzalo waited to hear Laura's music under her window. Gonzalo injured the shopkeeper during the conflict. Gonzalo left his birthplace for Seville and later Madrid because he feared the consequences of a conflict with a shopkeeper. That shopkeeper was quite highly known around there. After then, he tried repeatedly to reach out to Laura on multiple occasions, but she never responded. After that, he was unable to reach Laura. Laura's parents intercepted all of his letters. Because of her parents, Laura did not get a letter.

Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo are now plotting their demise. They share their tales of death. The elderly Don Gonzalo says he is a relative of the young guy. He said that the merchant was severely hurt, and the young Gonzalo had to quit his place. He travelled to Africa after enrolling in the military. He lost his life in the conflict and did so with honor. The elderly Laura claims to be acquainted with the person referred to as "The Silver Maiden" and to have known her as a youthful friend.

She also tells the terrible tale of her relationship with the brave young man Gonzalo. The elderly woman admits that her buddy spent a long time waiting for Gonzalo. One day, she was seen leaving her home on the beach. She sat down on a rock, wrote Gonzalo's name on the sand, and concentrated her eyes on the horizon. She was carried out to sea by the waves and drowned there.

After being apart from Laura for three months, Gonzalo had given up on her. Gonzalo left with a ballet dancer, whom he later married in Paris. He began to establish a family life. Laura, on the other hand, got married after a two-year breakup.

Both of them are aware that they are lying, yet they continue to act as if they are not. After almost 50 years, they cross paths again in the park, and both of them recall their intense love affair.
