Shatter Me Summary

Summary

The first scene of Shatter Me shows 17-year-old Juliette Ferrars being imprisoned in a tiny asylum cell because of her deadly touch. Although Juliette is not a risk to society and has been placed in several prison facilities after accidentally killing a little child, she has been there for so long that she starts questioning her sanity. The government that has taken over the country, The Reestablishment, has placed Juliette in an asylum because it intends to utilize her fatal touch like a weapon in the struggle against the underground forces. Juliette discovers that she will share a cell with someone one day.

She is shocked and perplexed to discover that Adam, a guy, is her cellmate, and they are both her age. Juliette feels that she's seen him someplace before, but she can't recall when or where. She initially refuses to speak with him, and Adam violently removes Juliette's pillow and blanket. After some while, though, the two begin to converse, and Juliette shows Adam how to live in the asylum while Adam offers Juliette his blanket after seeing that she is chilly.

Juliette is suddenly taken from jail by soldiers one day. She learns that Adam is a soldier assigned to spy on her when they take her to Sector 45, one of the regions controlled by The Reestablishment. She also meets Warner, the Sector 45 commander, who desires to exploit Juliette's deadly touch in his conflict with the rebels. He tries to convince her by promising her a comfortable and prosperous life in return for her cooperation. Warner provides Juliette with a well-furnished apartment in one of the compounds and designates Adam as her guard to demonstrate what her life may be like if she accepts.

Juliette refuses to work with Warner even though her room in the facility is considerably more pleasant than her cell at the asylum, where she was denied even the most basic amenities. Juliette chooses to go along after she learns that Adam was physically hurt due to her rejection of keeping him safe. She discovers the notepad she used to have at the asylum and predicts that Adam must have anonymously brought it for her. Juliette recalls that she and Adam used to be her classmates and that he was the only one who shielded her from bullies as she realizes that Adam genuinely wants to help. In time, Juliette and Adam begin a secret relationship when Juliette discovers that Adam is resistant to her touch. Warner continues to persuade Juliette to join his cause, and she is frightened by what he could be capable of in his quest for power.

Adam and Juliette start formulating an escape strategy. Warner tries to stop Juliette from running by touching her, but she soon discovers he is also resistant to her touch. She and Adam manage to escape and discover a tank that Adam had long ago buried. He introduced Juliette to his 10-year-old brother James as they arrived at his home. Soon after they get there, they are met by a soldier called Kenji. He reveals that he ran away after Warner tortured him to discover more about Adam and his location. When troops show up at the home, they all decide to leave. Juliette, James, Adam, and Kenji try to leave but are unsuccessful. Adam is shot by Warner when he finds them.

After capturing Juliette, Warner keeps pressuring her to join his cause. When Juliette hears him say how happy he makes her feel about being able to touch him, she starts kissing him and pulls him in so she can reach into his pocket for a revolver. After shooting Warner, she starts looking for Adam and ultimately discovers him with terrible injuries. They take a vehicle and head to a safe haven known to Kenji. While Juliette receives sedatives to recuperate, Adam is brought to a hospital wing.

When Juliette awakens, she discovers that she is in Omega Point, the main office of the resistance. She runs into Castle, a rebel commander, who tells her that they have been searching for Juliette for a long time due to her abilities. Additionally, Castle informs Juliette that 56 individuals with various special abilities reside in Omega Point, all working to further good deeds. Adam's injuries are entirely healed in a matter of days, thanks to their healers. Juliette also discovers that Kenji also joined the army to keep a watchful eye on Warner and his goals and that he has been working secretly for many years.

Juliette receives a specially designed outfit at Omega Point that enables her to touch others. She regains her confidence and feels prepared to join the resistance while wearing the uniform and in the company of like-minded others.
