The first chapter of the autobiography describes Verity and Jeremy's initial encounter and active sexual activity. Lowen notices Verity looking at her while she reads and feels more and more scared by her presence. Because of the manuscript's disturbing content, Lowen believes Verity was responsible for the deaths of her daughters. As Lowen and Jeremy's bond deepens, they come close to kissing. On the night before turning 32, Lowen relaxes with Jeremy. They start having sex. As Lowen can see, Verity observes them from the top of the steps. After completing the autobiography, Lowen determines whether, to be honest with Jeremy about Verity. She discovers that Chastin passed away at a sleepover due to an allergy.
