Summary

1 Stanza

"I am the …… I wait."

The poetess aims to convey the Earth's ability to endure. Like a mother, the Earth is personified and can handle all kinds of misdeeds. In the poem, the Earth referred to as the first person, expresses the things it can put up with. She explains in the opening stanza that the guy believes they are the owners of the world, and she only waits.

2 Stanza

"You shout……. I stare……."

She lies silently while people shout and claim the Earth as their own. The Earth quietly observes these actions, even if people buy property, boreholes that fill with mud, and let their automobiles run over her.

3 Stanza

"Then someone…… children dance/someone sings."

The Earth responds by declaring that anybody who plows her and plants trees will receive fruits, grass, trees, etc., in return. People are joyful as a result, while kids dance and some sing joyfully.

4 Stanza

"You come with guns…… chokes me now."

Mother Earth is suffocated and injured when humans try to set borders, and troops arrive with weapons and build a fence around her. It leads to fighting between rival groups that end in wars over land claims.

5 Stanza

"I wait. …. I wait."

Even though humans give Mother Earth a lot of suffering, she patiently accepts man's efforts and gently reminds him that he cannot enclose the globe with a fence. The size of the entire planet Earth makes it difficult for a man to fence it all in. Because she is the mother of the land, she patiently waits for humankind to understand the harm they are doing to her.

Conclusion

In the poem "I Am the Land," the poet asserts that the Earth's mother has a never-ending supply of patience. The land is used extensively by man, yet she patiently lies. Numerous human actions affect the environment. She's suffocated and choked by her chain-link necklace. However, the land asserts that man cannot enclose the planet Earth with a fence. Man does not have control over the earth. The Earth constantly has a superior position to man.

The speaker of this poem is Earth. Earth addresses the reader directly. The Earth is believed to belong to man. People purchase land and dig holes. Fences are built, troops fire their weapons, and the area becomes choked. She offers fruits and flowers as payment when people plow her.

Some people arrive with firearms and attempt to fence her in. However, only some people are aware that she cannot be fenced. She can punish people. But the Earth patiently waits for humans to understand.
