b. What are the four cardianal directions?

Answer: The four cardinal directions are:

c. What do you mean by the term 'the scale of the map'?

Answer: Scale of the map is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map. The scale of the map is divided into two types, small scale and large scale maps. Large scale maps respresents greater information than small scale maps.

d. How are maps more helpful than a globe?

Answer: Globe represents the whole Earth. A map represents a part of the Earth drawn on a flat surface according to the scale. A map is more helpful because it helps us to study different parts of the Earth, such as country, town, states, and villages in detail.

e. Distinguish between a map and a plan?

Answer:

Map: A map represents a part of the Earth drawn on a flat surface according to the scale. Map gives the detailed information of a part of the Earth, such as country, town, states, and villages.

Plan: A plan is a drawing of a small area on a large scale. Plan gives the details of the small things, such as room that cannot be shown on a map.

Answer: Large scale maps

Large scale maps are used to reperesent small area like a town or village.

g. How do symbols help in reading maps?

Answer: The symbols on a map helps us to locate buldings, rivers, roads, bridges, railway lines, and roads. All these symbols are shown using different letters, colors, pictures, lines, and shades. It provides us the detailed information in a limited space.
