History

University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo's existence starts with Waterloo College, presently Wilfrid Laurier University. When the college's presidency was transferred to Gerald Hagey, he was determined to expand the Institution. He also made necessary arrangements to acquire the necessary funds. Provincial Government remained the main source of income for higher education in Ontario.

Administrative Functions

The University function under the bicameral system of a board of Governors and a senate as per the provision made under the University of Waterloo Act 1972. The Board of Governors is accountable for university income, affairs, and properties. The University of Waterloo act has a provision of 36 members, and the members should have Canadian citizenship. The board comprised five ex-officio members, including

  • The Mayors of Kitchener and Waterloo
  • The University's President,
  • The Chancellor.

The remaining 32 members of the board are either appointed or elected by several members of the University Community, including the student body, faculty, and Alumni. The Senate is involved in the formation of the educational policies of the University and gives recommendations to the board of governors regarding the management of the Institution. 24 Ex officio positions of the Senate include:

  • The University's President
  • Chancellor
  • The Vice- President
  • The Senior Dean of each faculty
  • The President of the Undergraduate, graduate, and Faculty associated colleges

The Board of Governors appoints the President, plays the role of the University's CEO (Chief Executive Officer), and, with Senate clearance, commands the affairs of the University and acts on behalf of the board concerning the operational control and management of the Institution. He is a member of the board and chair of the Senate. The President also assumes the position of the vice-chancellor and conducts all the duties of the vice-chancellor in his absence or at the time of vacancy. The Chancellor has a tenure of three terms and is elected by the member of the Senate, and the tenure of the Chancellor could be renewed. The primary functions of the Chancellor are to preside over the convocation functions and give candidates for honorary degrees to the Senate. Vivek Goel was declared President of the University on 17 November 2020. His term started on 1 July 2021.
