The human rights system is a collection of rules that concern fairness and equality. It acknowledges our rights to make decisions about the way we live our lives and to develop our human potential. It is all about living in a world free of intimidation, harassment, or discrimination. These rights are standard to recognize and protect the dignity of all human beings. Human rights belong to all irrespective of sex, race, nationality, language, ethnicity, religion, etc.

What are Human Rights?

Human rights make everyone free and equal, regardless of gender, age, caste, creed, religion, or nationality. United Nations adopted human rights in response to the atrocities that people suffered during the second world war. On the 10th of December, 1948, the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The adoption of this document was the catalyst for the recognition of the fact that human rights are the basis for justice, freedom, and peace for everyone. While it's not legally binding, many nations have integrated fundamental rights in their constitutions as well as national legal frameworks. Human rights protect us from discrimination and ensure that our basic rights are safeguarded.

Human rights unite us all through shared rights and obligations. The ability of people to exercise their rights as human beings depends on the other persons who respect these rights. Human rights require responsibility and duty toward other individuals and the entire community. People are accountable for exercising their rights in a manner that respects the rights of other people. For instance, if one uses their right to free expression, they should use it without interfering with another person's right to privacy.

Importance of Human Rights

Human rights also grant people the opportunity to an impartial and fair trial. Everyone is entitled to move to court, where their impartial decisions are made. The court can be trusted to provide them with justice even when everything else is in vain.

The most important thing is that humans have been freed from all types of slavery. No one can force another individual to work as an enslaved person. Furthermore, humans are allowed to express and speak their views.

In a nutshell, Human rights are essential to the well-being of humans. In the modern world, they are constantly violated, and we have to work together to confront this problem. Both the government and the citizens need to make efforts to safeguard each other's rights and progress to improve the world. That's right, and this will guarantee prosperity and happiness throughout the globe.

With the growing importance of this topic, it is imperative that institutions of higher education recognize human rights as an autonomous discipline. The curriculum and course content of the human rights discipline could differ depending on the specifics and conditions of an institution. But, generally speaking, it should cover the rights of children as well as the rights of minorities and the rights of the poor and disabled, the right to live, the convention regarding women, the trafficking of children and women in sexual exploitation, etc.

Ever since the United Nations formed, its main agenda has been to promote and protect human rights. It has created numerous mechanisms so that any violation of human rights can be quickly detected. Treaties and organizations, U.N. special reporters, representatives and experts, and working groups are some examples. Asian countries like China argue in favor of collective rights. Asian nations like China advocate for collective rights. According to Chinese theorists, European countries lay stress on personal rights and beliefs, while Asian nations value the collective rights and obligations of families and society at large.

The freedom movement that swept across the globe following World War II and the end of colonization also brought an end to the apartheid policy as it was the most brutal violation of the rights of humans. As education is gaining traction, women are asserting their rights. Women's organizations play a crucial part in promoting the idea of human rights. They fight for their rights as well as support to defend the rights of the weaker and less fortunate sections, such as child labor, bonded labor, landless workers as well as unemployed Dalits, and older people.

Violation of Human Rights

Human rights violations, regardless of whether it is by states, terrorists, separatist groups, or extremists, is a punishable crimes. Whatever the motive, these acts must be categorically condemned regardless of their form or manifestation, however and wherever they occur. These are acts of aggression that aim to undermine the freedom of individuals, human rights, and democratic principles. Infringing on human rights and freedom causes feelings of discontent, anger, and terrorism. The governments run by ambitious and self-seeking individuals frequently resort to repressive measures and find terror and violence an effective method of control. However, state terrorism, violence, as well as human freedom infractions are extremely risky tactics. This has been the cause of every revolution in the world. When there is widespread and extensive state-sponsored oppression and violation of the rights of people, rebellions and revolutions have emerged. In the past, the French, American, Russian and Chinese Revolutions are excellent examples of people fighting for their rights.

The war that led to Indian Independence in 1857 was a result of oppression that lasted for a long time. During that time, Indians were brutally assaulted, and they were denied even basic fundamental rights. The ever-growing anger, discontent, and disillusionment from British rule led to intense national sentiments and demand for the right to political privileges and rights. In the end, the Indian people, under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, demanded that the British leave India and give back its independent status.

Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council, established on the 15th of March, 2006 through the General Assembly, reports directly to it, replacing the 60-year-old UN Commission on Human Rights as the primary UN intergovernmental body charged with human rights. The Council comprises 47 representatives from various States and is responsible for enhancing the protection and promotion of human rights throughout the globe by taking on instances that violate human rights and making recommendations about the issue, as well as responding to emergencies involving human rights.

A unique aspect of the Human Rights Council is the Universal Periodic Review. The unique process is a thorough review of the human rights reports of the 193 UN members once every four years.
